CMS + Blog?

Let's say I wanted to set up a website that had a blog and a lot of structured data like, say, lists of products broken down by mfr/model/year, or books by genre/author/series, that sort of thing? Also, the data sets will have custom fields like review scores and such.

I'll want the front page of my site to be a mixture of both sets of data; "articles" or blog entries mixed in with lists of the data set entries ranked by popularity or review scores or other custom fields.

Is this something that Drupal or Joomla would be good for? I haven't explored either very deeply. Is there another CMS that would be better suited to this?
 


Either Joomla or Drupal would be a good choice for something like this- it really all depends what you're more comfortable working with... (if you really wanted to you could do it in Wordpress)

If you're not afraid of a paid solution I'd say look into http://expressionengine.com/ as well.
 
Depends how much integration you need between the blog and the rest of the site. If this is a user generated content site, where users need to login into both sides and have their account associated with data and articles, then you need a system that will allow you do both. However, if the site is mostly admin driven and the end user doesn't need to login then you can different systems for 2 sides.

I have a number of sites where the blog is using plain old wordpress and there are is a custom PHP built solution for the rest of the site.

It'll be mostly read-only. I may give the opportunity to leave comments on items, but that's it.

I gotta say, I'm not seeing any real attractive Drupal themes, but Joomla has some really attractive ones.
 
If your developing yourself use whichever your more comfortable with. Save time money and headaches all can be manipulated to do what you want.
