I am quite new to PPC. I would like to start with promoting consumer goods as an affiliate.

But when I explore competition I find only brand retail stores in Google AdWords result listings (Google results right column).

What am I doing wrong? Or is there no place for affiliates to do PPC marketing for consumer products?

Not sure if I get your question but perhaps what's wrong is your mind set.. this isn't the brick and mortar world.

On the internet you can make money by giving away free stuff, while learning, forget consumer goods or anything that requires your traffic to get their credit cards out.
While learning... forget PPC.. find ways to send free traffic to your landing pages, there are tons of ways.

Well, my question is: how to promote consumer products (electronics, beauty products, etc) with PPC competing against all the retailers (being an affiliate to those retailers)?

I think I understand what he's asking and wouldn't mind some information myself.

Say you're an affiliate with Amazon.com and want to promote the "Planet Earth" DVD. Is it possible as an affiliate to compete with Amazon for the sponsored link on Google? If you search for Planet Earth there's only one Amazon link that comes up and they've got a million affiliates.

uh.. I have had a couple beers and am struggling with php crap so as to keep my adwords account as they have just notified me of uhmm, trademark issues" so... R you sure my advice would help? Perhaps help you getting busted! I am also not that good at affiliate sales but here are my drunken thoughts..
from where I am standing... I just searched for "Planet Earth" and got 6 sponsored results.(not a million.. but then the world is big and the BBC will sell to anyone, in my case.. the UK) 3 of which are of the DVD you mention, one is from ask.com doing arbitrage on it (!!) one is from waterstones.com selling a book and another one is totally unrelated.
What are you afraid of? Amazon? Then look to see if Amazon prohibits you to bid on the "Planet Earth" keywords. I find it fairly unlikely as they are selling the product themselves for the BBC and they are themselves competing against the BBC for those keywords. So... I guess you are game.
But don't take my word for it. I do know I cannot bid on Lloyds insurance but I can see what my competition is doing and generally do the same as they do.

But for dvds... If it was me.... I'd see if Amazon sell the Planet Earth dvds in Brasilian and then would bid for "Planet Earth" in brazil-land so I could be the only fucker selling it to the brazilians... in that case I wouldn't be competing against amazon or anyone else. Same applies to mexico and who knows how many nations. But Brazil and Mexico have no sponsored results for it as I just checked. On content these should be 0.02 clicks and there are WAY more brazilian/portuguese/mexican/spanish people than yanks and brits combined. They pay in $ nonetheless.
