Content locking - What's your style

I'm just getting into content locking and wanted to see what methods others have found to work best.

Do you content lock on your homepage?

Do you incentivize links that lead to content locking?

Do you run content locking on sites you care about? (like a blog that has your name on it or is directly connected to you?)

1. - On home page may get a high bounce rate unless they are returning to the site and know and want the content.

2. Like give a prize or payout each time they unlock the page?

3. Lock whatever the hell you want as long as you make money.
 
It is also a good idea to give them something for free prior to the locker. A lot of my webmasters will have some teaser content or free content on the main page, then put the "goodies" further into the site and lock those pages. Like a teaser video everyone has seen, then "NOW, here is what you probably haven't seen-"

Another method would be to give the first part of the process on the homepage and require them to go through the content locker to get the rest of the information.

If you change the content on the homepage often, it will keep them coming back and exploring all the content you have to offer.

Keep in mind to rotate your offers often because if you are relying on the same visitor to come back over and over, the advertisers aren't going to want the same lead etc. They are paying for unique subscribers etc.
 
Hi potter,
to avoid high bounce rate, give something off value to your readers.
It could be content, articles, free ebooks or videos, something of value related to your niche.
Get your visitors interested and motivated to get the goodies, then activate the locker as soon as they go get it.
Since they already invested time, if it's an easy email or zip submit you're sure to get a decent amount of leads.

I never really tried to do a content lock before but I was thinking of a method this morning that I thought might work out well. If someone with experience wants to PM me I'd like to hear what they think of the idea. It may even end up being something you guys do all the time.
 
Content locking your homepage is generally not a good idea. You want some sort of sales pitch or path to string the user along with before popping the gateway.
There are sites that can get away with the content locker on their homepage, but these are only in special circumstances (such as having a very well known site).

I'm not sure what you mean by incentivizing the links. The incentive is whatever is behind your locker.

Feel free to put the gateway on any website you want. If you're offering something of value then you have nothing to worry about.
 
It depends on your traffic's geo as well. Some sets accept content locking and you will profit, others need more prodding ie free stuff in order to give up their details. Just test out your niches and see which one works best OP.
 
Try thinking outside of the box with your methods. Most people will try and go for a movie site and lock that content. If you do simple google search, you'll find that there is a ton information that people are willing to pay for but have no way to find that I'm sure you can locate for free. Like said earlier, give away value first then ask for something in return.
 
Your website's content and your main method of promotion will determine if you should place a locker on your home page or not. If you've already sold the user on your content before they've visited your site then go for it.

Incentivizing the links? Usually the incentive is the content you provide behind the locker.

If you are placing a locker on content that you associate with your reputation, you will most likely want to make completing a survey optional or stick with some banners.

Most importantly, split test!
