I guess this is a noobie question so I'm posting it here. I've been trying to figure out the Google Adwords content network and its making me go insane.
What I'm trying to do is get a shitload of traffic (duh). I was promoting an offer for Coupons.com for this test. I created a content network only campaign, and created an adgroup called 'Coupons'. Note: I did also do some unobvious keyword adgroups as well to get cheaper traffic (such as supermarket names), but I wanted to try it with the more commonly used terms. ie. "coupons" to get max traffic.
Inside I bid on the following terms (yes Im dumb giving this all away):
coupon
coupons
groceries coupon
groceries coupons
grocery coupon
grocery coupons
online grocery coupon
Set the bid to .26 and walked away. 24 hours later, I got like literally 2 impressions. Fuck that noise.
Ok, so now I repeat that with .51 and .75 cent bids. No impressions. Finally I'm like fuck it. Bid .96 cents. Within about 2 hours I started getting crazy amounts of clicks in a very short period. The traffic I wanted! CTR was .25%. avg CPC was .75 cents on my .96 bid. So, I basically blew $200 in about 1.5 hours on keywords I should probably be paying .05 for.
This campaign has an extremely low payout, which is why I picked it for the test. There lie the problem. I can't afford .75 cent clicks for this campaign. I need them to be .05 - .25.
It feels like there is some final piece to this puzzle I'm missing. Was I on the right track and just let Google give me the anal intruder for a day or 2 and my bids go down? Or will they continue to gang rape me like an 18 y/o on ruphies? Is the only key to get 3% CTR on the content network.... sounds impossible?! I understand google wants high CPM, but it doesn't seem right that I have to drop $200 each time I want to test a new ad for CTR.
For the record, the supermarket keywords also wanted rediculous CPC for my ad to show at more than 100 imps / day. I don't think keyword selection is going to save me money on the content network like it supposedly does on search. For example. Regardless of what term I bid on, I want to show on the sites talking about coupons. So whether I bid on 'coupons' or I bid on 'Publix' (supermarket), I still have to compete for the same 3 slot ad-block. I still have to pay $$$$.
