So I am in a little financial slum because of med bills haha. I am trying to get into IM but I kind of want to take the white hat way which is going to take a while to make money from (if I ever do make money from it). Until then I do need to be making some money and I was wondering what are the typical rates I can make as a content writer? I am an American undergrad student at a strong engineering university. I am an engineering student and a pre-law student as I am planning to go to law school afterwards. So after I gain a reputation in content writing what kind of rates should I expect?

Also are websites such as elance and odesk reliable? Thanks.

I was looking around the sell and trade forums and it seems like a lot of people offer for 2 to 3 dollars for a 400 word article. Is this an initial fee just to get their work rated, because it seems a little low if you provide quality articles.

Slave like rates!? Trying to avoid that. So what is better? Looking for people to buy your content here on WickedFire?

Thanks Jake1125 I will contact him.

If you're good and you're prepared to give out a few free reviews to established members, you can get plenty of orders at 2-3 cents per word. That's pretty much the ceiling for rates here at WF though. Try kicking off your service with a "don't pay unless satisfied" guarantee.

On another recent thread on content writing here someone pointed out that "LSI writing is all the rage", so you'd do well to learn how to research LSI keywords.

You can also upload content to constant-content.com, where the average price per word is close to $0.10 (before their 35% commission). The downside? Incredibly strict editor (the tiniest of grammatical or spelling errors and your article gets rejected; get rejected three times and you're banned - though this isn't always enforced) and no guarantess that your article will be sold. Do it in your spare time.

Im a CD myself and I charge $1 per 100 words. Ofcourse I get my service charges from PP but that is a risk I am willing to borne. It's a service after all. Id say if you're serious about content, start a thread on the BST and share out some review copies. Build up a rep and boost that iTrader count. Post that, start building professional relationships, suck cock and make monies.

EDIT - CD isn't Cross Dresser.

If you have decent writing skills, you can try writing for TextBroker or The Content Authority in which I know pays pretty decent as well depending on the level of writing skills you have.

Okay I will look into some the groups mentioned and get at it. I will also need to research what LSI is so I can get good at writing articles that are "LSI" friendly.

One more question...how risky is it to use PayPal because I am not giving out a product that can be traced back to me so the other guy can just claim to have never received anything and I would most of the time lose that battle?

Thanks for all the responses, I will get to work and keep you guys updated.

If your writing skills are really up to the standards and your profile is just enough to be noticed by your work provider/employer I don't think slave-like rates will never be a problem due to the fact that you are the ones who place your rates in Odesk and Elance. Placing even the most highest rate per hour/per project requires deep self evaluation of course but if you think you truly deserve it you can still get what you wanted. It's not risky to us paypal for odesk and elance by the way :)

Scroll through the content section and check out what the unique selling points of the writers are who offer their services there.

Will also give you an overview of the current rates people are willing to pay. Especially digg into those threads that have a lot of posts and reflect that the provider has been around for a while. He must be doing something right :-)

You can try Demand Studios. At $15 dollars per article, you can make a lot of money, especially if you write about topics you're really knowledgeable in. CE's have been increasing strict lately and they frequently do writers development program sweeps to take out the bad writers.

Populiscreate is also a good content mill. You get paid £6.66 per article, which is almost $10. Review times can be lengthy occasionally but they pay every week.

haha i'm just joking around man. it was about editors i couldn't miss the chance. :ak:

Anyways thanks for the information. I will look into both tonight. I have a question for you and anyone else willing to answer. About these agencies/companies/websites whatever you may call them. They make me file taxes right? If i were to use paypal in the BST forum here...would I avoid taxes? It makes less money but I wouldn't be paying taxes and I can raise my rates eventually.

I hope you produce better writing content than that my friend. Anyways if I were to be completely honest, I would say to just get an above minimum wage job. If you can't work a normal job because of medical problems I would just get something along the lines of data entry or try to find an SEO company so you can at least learn while your working for them.

I don't know anything about the tax thing since I am not American, your tax system is vastly different than mine.

Damn typos. No problem dude.

I don't remember much about the tax related stuff though. I do remember writers being required to give their tax information or social security number to Demand. I just gave the latter. I'm currently based in Philippines so there's a minimum amount of money I have to earn before I'm required to pay taxes.

I haven't heard about anything related to taxes from Populis though.

Touche. Anyways, I will give selling content a try. It will be somewhat worthwhile if I do end up making money. Even if it fails I will come out with some sort of learning experience and I can only improve. Thanks for the input.

3-4$ per article is not pretty low, it is too low. I mean that won't even cover the cost of researching stuff to write it down. Well if you provided the articles then that is another story.

Try peopleperhour.com too, I've just hired some quality writers from there and if you're good enough you'll get decent rates.

IMO if you're gonna go content, you need to master two things: speed and quality. The people who make the most are those who don't sacrifice in either capacity.
