31 Killer Writing AdWords Ads Tips

Some people will tell you that you need a landing page for every offer. I believe most offers need landing pages but some don't. Most email submits don't for example. The offer is enter your email to get X, there isn't much a landing page could add. If you were promoting a health insurance quote or something you may need to presell the user a little bit or explain in more detail what they are actually signing up for.

When I started out with PPC I bought keyword elite and direct linked to email submits. For example one of my email submits was a lowes giftcard. I got keywords related to lowes/home depot/ace hardware etc and bid $0.10 on yahoo. I ended up converting about 2:1 until the payout on that offer was dropped.

Great advice bubbles, generous of you to give out specifics like that.

I agree fully, you don't necessarily need landing pages for all offers. Typically short lead forms, zip submits, and email submits will convert well without a landing page. Honestly, it all depends on your KW's and Ads ... if you're bidding on related terms AND you pre-sell in your ad copy the visitors going to be ready to enter the required info.

Can you still direct link on Google? I tried to paste my aff link in the URL field last week and wound up at about $10.00 per click...lol.

Let's hear it for the Content Network!

I'd like to know the answer to this too.

...or what about a quick refresh from your domain to the offer? I don't know what sort of QS Google would return on that.

You should NEVER truely direct link. When I say direct link I mean I'm either A. running through a cloaked URL to hide traffic sources or B. running inside of an iframe so I can increase QS.

Very true, never direct link using your affiliate links.

#1: Don't want to divulge your successful KW's in the referrer urls.
#2: All of the ppc networks HATE affiliate offers. Save your QS.

Here's a simple little PHP code that I used to use for single offers. Throw it on a sub-domain or domain as 'index.php'. Then link to it as follows.

http://coolwidgets.domain.com/?net=adwords&ad=1

PHP:
<?
$net=$_GET["net"];
$ad=$_GET["ad"];
if (isset($net)) {
header("Location: http://www.affnetwork.com/click.php?o=2391&sub=$net-ad_$ad");
} else {
header("Location: http://www.affnetwork.com/click.php?o=2391&sub=no-subid"); }
?>

Would a landing page be recommended for a campaign that perhaps requires the completion of only one form? Would I be penalized for working with an iFrame in this instance as well?

If you only lost $19 then Google isn't pinching much less kicking you. It's just telling you to throw a little more money if you're serious about this.

How do you mean? Maybe that's where I've gone wrong as well.

I'll start off a new offer with a daily budget of $10 - $20, just to test it out. I'll also start at about $0.30 - $0.40 a click, just to get impressions and a good CTR initially.

I'll put it on 'accelerated' and 'rotate ads evenly' and wait to see what happens.

Lately, I've been negative more than I've been positive. Should I start out at a higher daily limit? Maybe just need to swallow my fear and go for it.

Fear is what holds most ppc affiliates back -- at least, from my personal experience. Maybe I've just had lucky runs, but 80% of the time that I've set a budget to $100+ for an offer I've had faith in .. I've been profitable. Not all wildy successful, but profitable.

Make sure that you have an offer/landing page that you have faith in rather than throwing a bunch of shit at the wall and hoping one will stick. Rather work on developing a single solid campaign .. take the risk of investing a little time as well as the cash.

IMO, a much better approach.

I've found accelerated makes me pay more. I could be wrong though(I've only used it a few times).
Beyond that, the more clicks you get the better idea it gets of how your ad is performing. After a fair number of clicks, the prices drop if the ad is performing well.

I just felt you're being too conservative.

If you have proper tracking in place, might as well 'fail faster' and get your cherry popped. sure, you'll likely lose money but at least you'll get enough data to tweak properly. with a $20 spend, i doubt you have enough clicks to figure out where to go next.

Just a friendly FYI: a [ period ] belongs directly after the last word of your sentence. <--- Like so.
