Short version is:

One of my sites is getting 1 million visits a month, 8 million page views a month, and 80% of the demographic is 18-24. Currently I'm only averaging $0.78 cents a CPM which needs to change (per ad, running 3-7 ads per page depending on the page).

I getting ready to test my #1 ad spot with multiple affiliate ads but I am thinking about building a private network of advertisers to see if I can get a $3-$5 cpm averages per ad ($8 for spot 1, $5 for spot 2, $2 for spot three, etc).

Question: What are some of your best ad networks that have large fill rates and high CPM's? I really want to monetize the site a lot better. I can't help but thinking working with advertisers directly is going to be my best bet but I thought I'd ask.. Also, I'm working with 4 ad networks right now.

Thanks in advance!

Try adsense. It's CPC but they kill it on eCPM compared to what you are doing if you are able to work with them. If they don't allow you, I hear Chitika is acceptable replacement.

If not, you want to plug in as many cpm networks as possible to your adserver. Not just one but like 5-10. This way they all bid against each other.

My guess is if you are only on one network anyway, you may have a low fill rate. You may only be filling like 30% of your inventory with ads!!!!

Lastly, I hope you are collecting emails, could be a lot of money for you if you aren't. Would be worth some space dedicated to it.

I haven't really sold inventory on ecpm basis myself but as far as i read people generally recommend Valueclick & Casale Media.

Adsense is my 3rd tier (CPM, not CPC). Running 4 networks currently. Fill rates are between 70% for our ad networks and 100% for adsense. I thinking I'm going to go the private network route. I'll def look into both of your recommendations for networks though. Thanks.

Keep in mind there is impression loss when a network falls back to Google so the more networks you have on, the more impressions you lose. I think it's normally 10% impressions per passback.

Adsense is definitely my first choice, as their eCPM rates tend to be higher than the CPM rates offered by other networks. Pubmatic, Rubicon, Adconion, and Right Media come close. If you have the traffic, private network route will work best.
