"As far as I'm concerned, at 3 o'clock in the morning, nobody has any business being on the street, except the law," Councilman Eugene "Red" Johnson said. "Anyone out at 3 o'clock shouldn't be out on the street, unless you're going to the hospital."
I'm assuming your town had no live music venues or nightclubs then.
Geez man, that's pretty much martial law.

Almost every paragraph in that article contained something that was just mind bogglingly stupid.
I can see why you'd leave.

There were only two clubs inside city limits and both closed at 1am if I remember correctly. After that, the only places open were two gas stations and the Wal-Mart.

Every time that town is in the news it reminds me of that saying about how you should never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

Call me stupid, but this doesn't sound that unrashional, sounds like they are trying to clean up just a certain area where drugs and violence are a huge problem. It also doesn't look like the whole town but a part of it.

If shit is really that bad, then what's the problem trying to stop it?

This ^^^ mentality is what is wrong in the world today.

Everyone thinks utilitarian, short term. You're not considering the broader consequences of the government and police being able to establish martial law on demand. If they do it in a large area, and they maintain it, that is known as tyranny. These fucks are setting a bad precedent because they are not capable of conducting competent police work.

But that is how the world works today. The guilty punish the innocent and we call it "necessary", "Justified", "progress".

Let's all hear it for the land of the free!

Fuck, I thought that peom was sooo cliche, but it is happening right now, so here it is again:

First they came for the Socialists,
and I did not speak out
-because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
and I did not speak out
-because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I did not speak out
-because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me
- and there was no one left to speak for me.

The modern day US version just begins with

"First they came for the terrorists..."

Well, better revise that to say "first they came for the crackheads"

It also doesn't look like the whole town but a part of it.

On Tuesday, the Helena-West Helena City Council voted 9-0 to allow police to expand that program into any area of the city,

The council has given the police department the ability to expand the curfew to anywhere they wish.

but this doesn't sound that unrashional, sounds like they are trying to clean up just a certain area where drugs and violence are a huge problem.

Let me see if I can rationally explain why this isn't so great.

Remember last week when your sister dumped her cop boyfriend? Well, he's still pissed, so now your house is under curfew, even though you live in the better part of town where there's no need for it. Oh, and all your family's license plate numbers have be sent around as suspicious vehicles. Normally the fact that your vehicle is suspicious just means you'll be watched since they can't stop you without at least probable suspicion. But now, since there's a curfew and you or your family is violating it, that's the probable suspicion. So, you're pulled over, searched, and questioned. And if you mouth off at any point you'll be arrested and charged with POP (pissing off the police, commonly called disorderly conduct).

So, while I'm normally the first to cheer for my former co-workers, in this case I'm really feeling sorry for them. Odds are that by the time this is over, several of them will probably have lawsuits against them for violating people's civil rights.

This doesn't look good for those who work the night shift in that town. You could probably buy a house on a large property there for what it cost me to update my heating system in NY.

There aren't but a couple places there that have a night shift :D

The property values there are extremely low. I knew a guy who bought a couple duplexes and one quad-plex and spent less than 100K for all of them. Now he sits back and lives on the income from the rent for the most part.

Heck, the house I had there was 1800 sq ft, two car garage, huge yard and was in one of the better parts of town. The appraised value was only $60K. I miss my $350 a month mortgage payments... :crap:
