Do I need a dedicated server?

I am going to have an ecommerce site, a video about the software that we'll sell, and a blog. I am wondering if it would be worth it to get a dedicated server. I don't think we'd have over 10,000 unique visitors a month. But, if it doesn't cost too much more to have one, and it increases the speed of my site by a lot, maybe it would be worth it? Spending an extra $200 a month in order to have a ridiculously fast site with good video load times seems like it would increase conversions quite a bit.

From what you're going to do I can't say that you absolutely NEED one, but you can never go wrong going dedicated. I've had to upgrade over the past year and it's just a pain in the ass when your sites start getting too big for their britches and you have to migrate everything.

If the $$ aren't a big deal, save yourself the headache down the road and go for the dedi. I have two Hostgator dedi's and they're great. I've always had really good support there too. HostGator Dedicated Servers $174.00

I have a basic and a standard. Good luck with your ecommerce project.

With a company like Hostagator you can very easily upgrade. Start off with the baby plan and work your way up as your site grows.

As efeezy said, Hostgator is awesome for their customer service. They will actually make the changes when upgrading for you (move your files over to the dedi server etc).

Don't skimp on hosting. If you can't afford a $50/month VPS then you probably should EXPECT downtime in a big way and headaches when your host shuts up shop and leaves town with your data and money.

Yes, bro, you need the one. If you want to lower your traffic, than optimize your site.
If you expect traffic increase any time soon then you may wanna go with providers like amazon where you can add another server in 5 minutes if needed. The cheapest hosting is in US but if you deal with adult content, I'd get it somewhere outside of US. I hope that helps.

Should I go with a VPS or dedicated server, if I want my site and video (which won't likely get more than 10000 views a month) to run as fast as possible for visitors?

Also, it sounds like there are a lot of different dedicated servers out there, and they can be customized depending on your needs. Is there a good blog post so I can read up on servers and decide what mine needs?

VPS should be good for you for now with room to grow as long as the host helps with migration to servers (they usually do). Check my sig out

I also recommend HostGator even though I don't actually currently use them. However, just looking at what you're going to be running, I don't think you need a dedicated server.

I have a reseller plan with resellerzoom and they have their faults so I don't recommend them, but on an advanced reseller account, I host a handful of sites, two being ecommerce with a considerable amount of traffic each month. I don't think if you're just getting into the game that you should spend very much on hosting... keep your overhead low so you can invest that money into the marketing side.

really depends on how much you want to spend per month and how much traffic you are getting. VPS is great, but a lot of companies make you pay for bandwidth, so if you are serving a ton of videos, and plan on hosting them on site it might not be your best option. That being said, it still may cost you less than a dedicated, and it should give you all the speed you need.

Good news is most hosts will let you migrate with relative ease if you start with a smaller plan and decide you need more...

Don't get a dedicated server to start with. Get a reseller account at someplace like Hostgator where you can grow into a VPS, and then grow into a dedicated. So don't worry about right now but position yourself to move easily. Avoid godaddy for anything.
