I mean how hard is it to unblock them if you're got that DEEP urge to use facebook or watch porn? :crap:

Honestly, none of that stuff works for me. I find that once I block everything, if I get it into my head to waste time on one of those websites/softwares--I will find a way around it.

I suggest you keep a journal of all your time wasting, handwritten. It's more effective for me to realize in my own words what a failure I've been in misusing my time and the consequences there of, thus removing the temptation of wasting time because I'm guilt-tripping myself by not wanting to write in said journal and read previous entries.

Self control? Maybe you should try to exercise it sometime.
Looks like it!

You're spot on my brother. Even I've tried blocking stuff before but as you said I always find a way around. Maybe I'll try the journal idea to make me realize wtf I have been doing with my precious time.

Rexibit is right. Using a journal was the best thing I've ever done. I'm much more motivated by seeing my to-do list shrink and the results of it all. You'll feel terrible once you've realized how much time you've wasted on FB, WF, and porn.

You could always get a boss that screams at you for low productivity levels. That's what most people seem to do.

9-5 FTW!

Either that, or just be constantly mindful how grateful you are not to be a 9-5 slave with a boss, and get to work.

I have my wife punch me in the balls if she sees me on any non work related site between the hours of 8am-6pm.

I have all time wasting websites blocked on my laptop permanently. If I wanna waste time, I'll have to use my iPad.

My iPad is upstairs. I'd rather stay on the computer working than go all the way upstairs to get my iPad...basically I increased the level of resistance.

Also I get more satisfaction from checking off something on my to do list

Irony:
In the quest to make better use of time create a thread on WF to get opinions for further research vs. 10 mins to install LeechBlock resulting in hard data.

How do you block websites on your lappy 'permanantly'? If you can block, you can unblock em too?

I use this every morning and set it for 24 hours.

I can't unblock it if I restart the computer, or switch browsers. Exercise a little willpower? What happens is over-time I conditioned myself to stop wasting time on my laptop.

If you guys are that addicted to the internet then take a week vacation somewhere and have a technology detox.

Thanks ngo. The app looks awesome but too sad I'm using a pc. Do you have any similar recommendation for pcs?

I think your best bet then is logging into your router and blocking websites from there.

There's also

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/laankejkbhbdhmipfmgcngdelahlfoji

StayFocused for Chrome which is REALLY good. If you wanna unblock the site, it makes you type this extremely long paragraph perfectly.

I think something useful is having an alternative plan when you get the urge to waste time. I noticed it usually happens when I'm working too hard and wanna give my brain a rest. So instead of going on Facebook, I'll just take my dog out for a 10 minute walk. When I'm back, I'm ready to work.

Read your blog, good stuff!

Added it @ AffiliateMarketers.com, plz post MOAR kthx.

I agree with Ngo in setting up annoying obstacles or making it impossible.

Block the sites in your host file
Install browser blocking plugins
Setup a home server that is a transparent proxy / dns caching server block the sites then uninstal OpenSSH so it's a bitch to change anything
Change your router password to max characters and print it out so you would have to type it in manually to change anything

Plan B.
Send me money every time you visit these sites.

+1 for Cold Turkey. I've been using it for a week.

I haven't tried to kill it with Taskmanager or Startup, but I think it's designed to be harder to shut down than that. I'm sure there's some way that's easy, but compared to just switching browsers or uninstalling an addon it's a lot harder to get around.

Cold Turkey: The Free Productivity Program

I also stumbled across Time Snapper, which is similar to Rescue Time, but can show you video playback of your work time, etc. Pretty cool.

TimeSnapper - make timesheets a snap

Side note, I quit using Facebook, I don't look at MSM news, never go to Digg/Reddit, I only check email once a day or less. Wickedfire is by far my biggest online time waster. But I'm pretty good about managing it, I try to avoid surfing or chatting at all times when working unless necessary.
