Do you guys donate to charity?

Salvation Army they are one of the few with troops on the ground. They are one of the few places someone can go when the chips are down

You mean donating to a CEO's paycheck? Ha no...

My family used to own a foundation, or still does? Not sure.. But they had at least $1.5 million to throw around. However all of it went to specific things like buying wheelchairs for people, or vans with lifts for disabled groups, or housing/rent for mentally disabled people who can't afford it, etc. Each member only was paid like $250/year for their time. $0 went to advertising. In short there are some places that do the right thing...

But I've come to realize 95% of charities spend more money on themselves than they do helping other people. Even the church, which is supposed to this, "ultra-giving" place is such a fraud. Everyone knows that 90% of any Church funds go to the building rent, donuts and coffee, salaries, non-charity misc purchases, etc. Maybe like 5-10% gets really donated, and when it is donated, now you're dealing with the next charities cut. So it's one big cycle where the left overs are next to nothing...

My time > money. I've spent some time volunteering rebuilding homes.. Haven't done anything lately, working every hour of my day from sunrise to bedtime doesn't leave me much free time even for myself.

I've volunteered time for the red cross and animal shelter. Met my mate in the red cross in alabama (she was from seattle, me MD) during hurricane katrina relief, got my dogs from the shelter when they were about to be put to sleep.

True story :eek7:

I don't directly give to charity but I'm constantly trying to be a better neighbor everyday

There are enough homeless people around me that I can help directly. If not, I'll buy items and send them to various small charities. One that I like in particular helps single moms that need diapers and other baby stuff.

Giving gives me a good feeling , but I consider it a long-term investment. That money will eventually make its way back to me in some form.

Not really a donation...more of a micro loan, but any decent business or business idea that can grow, on Kiva
