If so, do you believe it is a result of being in front of computer screens for a large portion of your life? Or does it just tend to run in the family?
I've had dodgy eyes since I can remember, the rest of my family have no problems.
Sitting at the computer for very long periods of time can affect your sight, it tends to make you more short sighted. My eyesight stayed exactly the same for most of my life and started to change after a few years of heavy computer use. Oddly enough I'm long sighted so its actually improved my vision slightly.
You can help the effects by taking frequent breaks so you don't strain your eyes, also try to stretch them. Sounds weird but it helps them feel better if nothing else when you've been sat a computer for several hours.
I thought that LCDs, LEDs, (flat panel shit) didn't affect your eyes at all or very little and the old school CRTs fucked your shit up. i don't know, thats what i thought. But i have glasses and contacts, i don't ever wear my contacts. For my next birthday im going to get lasik eye surgery as a present to myself.
Personally I believe, if you have the genetics for it, spending a lot of time focusing your eyes on a nearby object (be it a book or a screen) will make your eyesight worse when it comes to seeing far away objects.
And vice versa. I need glasses all the time for that reason... while my dad needs glasses to read a newspaper (hint: he works outdoors and didn't spend 20 years in school)
Thats pretty much what my optician told me ^ I don't think its to do with genetics though, more the strain it puts on your eye muscles and which way they turn.

When I said genetics I mostly meant the amount of strain your eye can take and how adaptive your eye muscles are.
Just like elite athletes have muscles that adapt quickly and can take a lot of wear and tear, some people have "elite" eyesight. While others, like us, don't.
My doctor told me to stop masturbating but eventually I got glasses. Was OK for a while but I found that for some reason I was always out of lens cloth, so I ended up getting lasik.
I wear glasses because I have a huge phobia of anything getting into my eyes. For you young guys, wait till you hit your 40s, then you get to enjoy bifocals...
