Does directory submission actually help with ranks? What if you have 100 keywords?

Hey guys,

Directories exists for like 20 years already, and they used to counk for link juice.

Is it still true as of 2008? Does submitting to directories still boost you in the SERPS? or is it only really used for the miniscule direct traffic?

Also, let's say if I have like 100 keywords, and each keywords has like 5 anchor text in them, does that mean I have to do 500 different SUBMISSIONS to those 2000 direcories???! Can you say SPAM?!

Anyway those are my 2 questions. Please give me some insights!

A lot of peeps says that directory submissions are WAY overrated..

directory submissions aren't overrated at all. they cost less than $10/100 submits. they have no negative effect on rankings and directory submissions definitely are showing up in my backlinks.

100 keywords? for fucks sake, learn how to consolidate. even if you website does 100 different things, most directories dont let you submit anything other than the domain.com (no subdirs). most submission services will alternate between keywords of your choice.

you need to seriously consider reducing the amount of keywords. YOU are overrating directory submissions and keyword-care in general if you think you need to anchor tag 100's of keywords.

I would never rely on directory submissions... but they're so fuckin cheap why not grab a few hundred links for $50>? And like Mahz said... you really dont understand how they work if you're trying to submit 100 variations of your site.

why don't you test it out. choose a very non competitive industry and create a site and submit it to a few hundred directories. if you start to rank you know it works.

still a Proven way of getting backlinks for cheap... Can this answer be any more simple.

I was always afraid of trying directory submissions for a new site because I assumed that Google would get suspicious when a new site all of the sudden has > 100 links coming from all "directory"-type websites.

Most of the time, even if all the links are added to the directory in the same day (which doesn't really happen all that often) it will be a while before Googlebot comes to spider the page again so it will see all the new links over time.

Directory Submissions still get you a heck a lot of backlinks.
Usually you get almost 300-400 backlinks/1000 submits.
Now, assume 1000 submits cost you 70$ , then the cost per link is just about 20 cents per link.

Heck, i would shoot them even if google devalue's directories to a large extent, since the service is super cheap and i can get a few gold backlinks out of those submissions en-masse ;)

WTF, I had my site submitted to like 100 different directories and not 1 backlink. Fuck Directories!
