Does hostgator fuck with your cron?

Yesterday I set up a cron job on my shared hostgator account to be run every minute. It was working fine with no errors, it's not CPU intensive or anything. It's just a script that fetches pageranks of URLs.

Anyways today I noticed it wasn't doing its job, and then I saw that my cron job had been changed to */18 which I think means once ever 18 minutes. I didn't make the change.

Have you ever had hosts just go and change things like this without asking you? They could have at least e-mailed me or something if they didn't like what I was doing.

Thoughts?

just get yourself a vps and watch your headaches go away. I hear volsh has great hosting :)

Liquid web, wired tree, etc.... just go with a stable company.

Yeah hostgator blocks cron under 15min i think. I've had an issue with both hostgator and godaddy with crons.

goodluck

Actually I think the proper solution would now be to create a second cron job that runs every 15 minutes with the sole purpose of editing the crontab file to make my other cron job run every minute. ha ha ha

Or I can just edit it myself each morning to run every minute. Hostgator seems to only change it overnight (probably automated).

I wonder if there is a way to edit crontab from php on hostgator shared accounts?

Yeah, anything <15 min is gonna be randomly assigned a time between 15 and 20 minutes on their servers.

That said.. why would you need to fetch pageranks every 60 seconds?

they oversell / overload the shared servers like some cheap bucket shop airline.

Which is why they have to hamstring yer crons.

Pales into insignificance when you look at their policy of shaving your commissions, withholding money they owe ya, etc. Hostgator = cunts.
