I found a domain which could have been both never registered before or could have been banned hence not show up in google

the domain is pretty long ( 4 keywords ) and the .net is currently registered and active, which makes me think the .com could be banned

I don't want to work on a domain which doesn't have any chances to rank, is there a way to know something more about a domain?

domaintools - check the whois history and all the other good stuff.

Also SE's cache (long shot) and also archive.org.

Google search's for the domain name in quotes - look through a few pages.

Also, if you find that the site has been owned before, try a site:yourdomain.com search, and also a link:yourdomain.com search. If google bans a domain, it also cuts off the backlinks...or used to.

In any case, if you find that the domain had been blacklisted, you can still request for re-inclusion using google webtools. If the site has been dropped and is available for hand regging, then this shouldn't be a problem.

Alas, you should note, that depending on the domain name and the niche, some TLD's are preferable to endusers than .com's anyway, such as .info, .org and so forth. Odds are, with a four word domain, your worries are needless.
