I don't know about you guys but one of my favorite hobbies is scouring through domain registries for that diamond in the rough. We all have different things we're looking for: some for aged, some for EMD, others for backlinks, some just want pr to turn around and sell it to the idiots out there. That being said, where I keep getting stumped is finding the history to the domain. Which may be important depending on what you intend to do with it. I mean flwkope.com may be 13 years old and have a pr of 5 but what the hell was it used for? (example) Especially if there's no backlinks to help give you an idea. Yeah I've tried waybackmachine and archive.org but I almost never find anything related to the domain. I do the different search strings to find any relevant info to the term or domain and nothing.

Anyone have any tips for finding out a domain history?

domaintools.com has tools for checking the whois and hosting history of a domain. These would only give you things like the owner(s) and nameservers, but might be enough to have some idea of how the domain was used.

It's tough overall - I think the trick is to try to stay up do date with the domains you're researching. If you catch them a day or two after you can still view the cache in the search results and figure it out. archive.org is good sometimes. If I can't find any info in both the archive or in the search results cache I most likely will pass as "Age" starts when a site is first discovered by google ( a link, indexed page etc).

I will also try the yahoo backlink tool and a exact match search on the google like "domain.com" and see if anything is discovered.

Not much out there that I know of for researching it...

I too like to look through older domains. I run through domain auctions I have several tools that check as domains expire.

I use the way back machine and domaintools.com for my information. If I think something is interesting.

many times I find these domains have been inactive for one to two years. I'm not so sure the domain history place that big a part in a new site that you might put up on this old domain. (unless it was some service that you really don't believe in. Or some service that might offend your new users)

If you look in waybackmachine and archive.org and have found nothing. It's a good chance the domain never was really anything and your future use should not be limited on a history you cannot determine.

These are just my opinions
