I was trying to find a simple domain for niche market but all the keyword combinations were exhausted. I then looked for domain with numbers like XXXX4u etc.. is this a good idea? or should I try to use dash with perhaps 3 keywords XXX-XXX-XXX.com etc before going for numbers?

depends on how you're marketing. if you do any word of mouth or audio stuff, I highly advise against numbers in a domain - especially in place of a word. if it's all online and visual - not a big deal.

"come on down to harry's porn emporium on the cross roads of County Road W and Hwy 88. check us out online at harryporn4u.com, that's harry porn, the number four, the letter u"

hairypornfouryou.com
hairyporn4u.com
harrypornfouru.com
harryporn4you.com
hairypornforu.com
hairyporn4you.com
harrypornfouryou.com

etc.

just something for consideration

if the number fits in with what the site is about I would think it is ok... for example if you were creating a site teaching intro snorkeling tips, you could use something like snorkleing101.com but generally it is best to avoid using numbers whenever possible.

If you are looking to drive mostly organic traffic then three keyphrases with dashes is acceptable if you plan on doing some additional seo work on the site. It still currently doesn't rank as well as exact URL matches though and it will never be easy to market offline or through word of mouth if that is your plan.

I would make sure I've exhausted all non dash, non number solutions first... find some good adjectives to surround your main keyphrase and see if those combos are available before using numbers or dashes.
