Domains Not Recognized By Google

I have come across a couple domains I would like to develop.

I have read that some sites are "de-indexed" by Google.

How do I tell if the name I am buying is available because the previous owner was "de-indexed" and then let the registration expire? These would be domains I come up with using keywords etc - not domains for sale by others.

I searched the forum but could not find an answer.

I wouldn't worry about it. Google has access to WHOIS info on the domain, so when the ownership and DNS changes, I'm sure they'll take the hint- not to mention when the site changes its content entirely. This'll be find if you're buying direct from the owner, but especially if the domain has expired.

Check archive.org and see if there is any record of the site. This won't tell you what kinds of links the site was getting, but you can at least look at the site an see if it was shadylooking.

If you want to see if it still has any pages indexed in Google, then go to Google and enter the query site:[sitename-dot-whatever] and see if it has anything listed. If someone else currently owns the site, and it's been around for a few months, then it should have at least a few pages indexed. If it doesn't, something is fishy.

If the site hasn't been up for a while, then it may or may not show anything in Google. I don't know how often G flushes its index of dead sites, but someone else might.

I know it's not a 100% complete answer but it should help with the basics.

Thanks.

I just purchased 2 sites and put one up already and began second guessing myself.

Then another add on question - I want the sites up for the long term and do not need to rush things and risk problems with Google - how long should I wait before buying a few social bookmarking services from say red_virus?

I am a little fuzzy on the process I should follow once the site is up - all legit long term white hat stuff if possible.
