Downloading vids of Youtube?

For some reason the app (youtube downloader) and sites I used to use have stopped working for me.

Have youtube done something to prevent downloading? Previously this seemed quickly circumvented.

I use DownLoad Helper but a lot of times the mp4 downloads turn out all fucked up. No idea why. ZamZar is usually a sure thing but of course it takes longer.
