Can anyone tell me what their experience is with emailing people to promote a service? I've scraped a few hundred emails from web dev firms and graphic designers to promote my service. These are unsolicited emails. Any feedback would be welcome.

Generally sending spam is not a good idea. But it depends on your target audience. If you send spam to sophisticated persons, then you can have a serious headache on your hands in terms of negative reputation online for your brand. However if you send spam to un-educated people, there maybe a higher open rate.

In my experience, if you are just NOW getting to spamming scrapped emails from websites, you are already too late, that's a technique used in 2006 era. Old school, and for the most part all those emails have been spammed to death.

My opinion, this can only go downhill if you don't know what you are doing.

Carry on..

I suggest you to not do it, because people can really get annoyed with you.

If you send me such email, I will throw away your email without even reading it.

Go to freelance sites, offer your service.

If you've never mailed before you're also VERY likely to hit spam box with all your emails. Hitting the inbox is harder than ever, really need to know what you're doing to consistently inbox emails.

And as mentioned it's very illegal and can get you in some serious shit if you piss off the wrong person (most of the emails you scrape are getting hit with 20 Viagra emails/day).

Many other ways to get started, you shouldn't get into email until you're ready to invest a decent chunk of cash and a lot of time learning.

Don't send out a mass email to people who haven't subscribed, or opted-in to your mailing list. Instead, single each one out and write them a personalized message. Don't get personal, but read over their website and understand what their business might need from you before sending an email.

Make it obvious to them that you're not spam and you actually know what their business is all about and what their needs are. In other words, make it obvious that the message isn't something that could be sent to dozens of other people. Otherwise, you are at risk for getting marked as spam, and then your emails won't show up in anybody's inbox.

I see that eastern companies are doing that...I'm getting at least 5 emails daily. But I have never took any of those offers.
Anyway, I guess if you send 100k emails you will make one sale.

You'll need to learn to write converting copy (takes time and practice) and you'll need to learn how to skirt the spam filters. Here's a good noob friendly article from Mail Chimp How Spam Filters Think and here is a big old list of words that commonly trigger spam filters: Spam Words

I should tell you, like some of the other posters in this thread that unsolicited email is not only unethical and illegal... it's not a very effective strategy these days. Everyone hates spam. That said, if you are still going to go down that road... Split test and try to keep yourself out of trouble. ;)

To be simple what these people do is they will collect contacts through the online facilities. once after gathering the contacts, they will send emails all together. since more emails were sent within fraction of seconds, they goes into spam. The other problem in this is, the people who are not in need of this product will also be receiving these mails. The total effort goes in vein.
To make the email marketing effective there are certain factors to be noted, like the mails should not be sent in bulk, they must be sent only to the people who are in need of this product. and the most important thing is the subject used in this email. the words like free, offer should be strictly avoided. The spam words will take the mail automatically to spam, hence they should also be avoided.

Assuming you targeted right, I believe your success rate will depend upon how good you are able to convince them it was not a spam email

As everybody else are already noted - don't be spammy, this is the most important rule in mailing.
Be more personal, talk to your audience like with an old friend. Try to be useful for your audience, send them some freebies or some tips

Sending generic and spammy emails won't get you anywhere or it will even damage your reputation and you can get banned from email providers. If you really want to promote your services you need to do it honestly and to put some effort into writing email messages and presenting your offer. The best idea would be to use personalized approach in emails, and to direct messages to each lead personally. Also, when you start sending emails take care that you don't send them all at once as this would also be a very bad practice, segment your list and leads somehow and send smaller chunks of emails each day, for your emails not to end up in spam section.
