From: Utah is Ending Homelessness by Giving People Homes | NationofChange

How did Utah accomplish this? Simple. Utah solved homelessness by giving people homes. In 2005, Utah figured out that the annual cost of E.R. visits and jail stays for homeless people was about $16,670 per person, compared to $11,000 to provide each homeless person with an apartment and a social worker. So, the state began giving away apartments, with no strings attached. Each participant in Utah’s Housing First program also gets a caseworker to help them become self-sufficient, but they keep the apartment even if they fail. The program has been so successful that other states are hoping to achieve similar results with programs modeled on Utah’s.

So what does WF think about this?

It seems like a good idea for people who don't make much money to stop paying rent. It seems governments are willfully ignorant of incentives and the actions they cause.

"annual cost of E.R. visits" - who knew so many homeless had health care insurance?

Not sure if serious, but the reason it costs so much is because of the fact that they don't have health insurance and they aren't able to pay. It's the hospital that has to foot the bill and many of those hospitals receive funding from the state for the uncompensated care they provide. Don't want to get into a huge debate on how fucked up the health care system is here in the US, but trust me, the 'frequent flyers' aka the homeless people that use ER beds as homeless shelters are huge costs.

This is a logical solution to the problem.

These people are lazy and will never better themselves on their own regardless of the incentives. Give them a home and at least they aren't clogging up the streets with their filth.

I agree with your overall point. But I'd argue that many politicians are well aware of the actions caused by these incentives. A nice side-effect for them is that it breeds dependence, helps them justify taxation and reinforces the illusion that Government is good and necessary.

Coincidentally, the city council in my town is voting on a bill today that would make it illegal to give away food to the homeless. They'd only be allowed to eat at state funded shelters.

"You are under arrest for the crime of attempting to feed a hungry family."

Silly Government.

Sometimes youve got to wonder how people can be so defensive about their "ayn rand" beliefs.

If a homeless, or a non homeless who unfortunately doesnt have insurance, walks into an ER with a torn aorta (somehow), medical staff will throw treatments worth 6 figures at him, in spite of the fact hes going to die almost certainly. because its a human right. because its a doctors obligation to help him as best he can. because thats the level of technology we have arrived at. its just part of the game now. theres no bullshit right wing opinion or bullshit left wing opinion about this shit. theres no way to take that away from anyone.

but you somehow cant fathom giving the unfortunate a roof over their head? even when it fiscally is just the better option? sure, youd rather have every ounce of your non-taxes back before one of those suckers gets a single penny. you want to fly to the moon, but google cant do it because they are big so they are evil. government cant do it because they are evil. it should be done by private corporations but big business is evil.

take a step away from your own hubris, just for a moment, and let the utter insanity of your contradictory bullshit sink in. youre not clever. you probably dont even have money. for some of you, the only thing youve got left is extending the ultimate adolescence insult well into "adulthood" by way of calling each other gay. shit on those idiotic homeless as much as you want. at least theyve got integrity.

some of them might be homeless because they got billed hundreds of dollars for shit that was meant to be free btw.

I can totally fathom it, but do it of your own volition. Don't hide behind a governments skirt and have them use their monopoly on deadly force to make me give something to someone.

i'd wager the biggest demographic to flood utah's new program wouldn't be the surrounding homeless (they'd certainly go as well), but all the local/surrounding people currently paying for apartments who'd rather say fuck it & "become homeless in utah". comical.

I wonder, are you showing your true retarded self here, or are you showing your true troll self?

Why post here if everyone here is a retard and you are so smart? So you can feel superior by being around people that are inferior? That doesn't sound like a very superior thing to do.

The only reason you aren't either in red or banned is because insulting people is a very prized talent on this forum.

Troll bait.
Someone elses time, energy and knowledge is meant to be free. I guess grindstone needs to start spilling the seo secrets.

MIT has all their books online for free, or was it Harvard...

you cant cure homelessness buy giving away houses and you cant educate people buy giving away college material.

I think people only value what they earn, give or take a small percentage of humble gratefuls.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH~~~~~~~~

I don't think that even if I was about to make some bullshit comment on a subject that I knew completely nothing at all about I could come up with a better argument then that. I mean wow.

I'm going to make this short and sweet for you.

We live in a society based around working class people supporting the businesses that produce products, services and the like. What a homeless person essentially does is leech the wealth from right underneath us, disrupting the working class. They do not work, they do not help produce anything tangible, they do not make scientific discoveries, they do not in any way serve absolutely any purpose in our society whatsoever. Yet they are stealing wealth from us in the form of "social benefits". This type of feel good behavior only encourages homeless people to continue to not be a net positive part of our society. In fact just finding this out now makes me want to not work, simply because I don't have to. The state will take care of me.

Could you imagine the giant cliff we would be jumping off with a 2 ton titanium block chained to our ankles if not even all, but enough of us tried to take advantage of the system such as these losers? I mean I'm honestly offended that people who choose not to work are offered better opportunities in our society than those who choose to be a net positive part of it.

While I definitely see your point about the fiscal benefit actually being in favor of the free apartment plan, your completely overlooking the devastation that would follow if enough people realized that they too could get away with it. On an emotional level I want to agree with you but from a logical standpoint you could not be more wrong.

Maybe there will indeed come a day where humans can have their 5 hour work week thanks to technological and scientific advances. Until then; too bad, so sad.
