Hey there,

I would like to start a site selling various stuff to smoke, but I would like to keep information about ownership of domain private. I know I can setup a protection of domains whois, but I guess that some gov agencies can see your details. Ofcourse what I would like to do is legal to some point, I think, but eventhough I wouldn't like to be under someone's public or silent investigation. My first idea was that I give a fake name and adress, only email would be real but I'm not sure if in this case in the future I could lose very valuable domain because of the ICAN rules.

Later then I plan to register an offshore company, which will ensure me some level of privacy for some time, but until I don't see if site would be profitable this is not an option.

Every help is welcome..

Take care guys

tnx for the link,..

but still, there's a question of ICANN's sanctions if they found out or somebody reports you..

i don't wanna lose my domain once i put effort in building a brand

take care

it will be legal, but I don't want my name to come up, ever

hahaha good luck with that, we all like to think we have some sorts of anomity online when the real fact of the matter is we don't have as much as preached.

First off if your doing something illegal then any agency can say to whoever your registar is hey we are the law they are bad give us there info, and your registar (if in any major country - US, Canada, Not Nigera) will say "Yes Master Here You Go"

Thats so they can cover there own ass, if they didn't give up the info then they could get fucked just as well for hosting the shit.

From there if they really wanted to they can track down various IPs your using, do vast database searches on your information in the registry, call up your ISP, find out where you live to even fuck you harder.

So unless you know your shit (Which forgive me if I'm wrong) you obviously don't, I suggest not to be greedy, set up a legit site, and use the standard, WHOIS info to hide your identity.

This will protect you from the average joe, your friends, family, people like that, however the long hand of the law has various and I mean various methods of seeing through the hidden info online.

I think someone once complained that every time they clicked something and looked behind them they could see there footprint. (There is a lot of info in this last paragraph if you know how to read it).

If it's not illegal then what the fuck do you have to worry about?

Here's what I would do if I were you...

Register the domain offshore (this could even mean the UK) or transfer it there so it is out of the DEA's theoretical reach (see the Kentucky gov't action against gambling domains for an example as to why this is a good thing (though this was at the sate level and the DEA are the feds so your mileage may vary) ). Get yourself a BVI company. Put the domain in said company's name.

That's it.

Look at what other "smoking" sites are doing for more ideas.

People worry about the whois listing coming up when a potential future employer looks them up.

Frankly, I wouldn't want Dildosfordudes.com* coming up with the whois listing if a potential client looked up my name and a term like "websites". Likewise, I can understand why anyone running a bong site would not want their name associated with it.
If you go to tin foil hat level of my post, you should be fine, so long as you remember to do edits from public computers that don't require identification to use them. Or go wardriving...

*example only. I don't actually own dildosfordudes.com
That said, if anyone's got the inclination to make a site, the URL's available. Consider it my hannukah present to you.

I'd be pretty impressed if icann took away your domain for inaccurate whois. It's not enforced really. Maybe a handful of exceptions can be found, but icann spends most of their time on their ass.

Aequitas is right, if you have to ask, then you don't know enough to pull it off.
My own advice would be to look up an existing illegal site and see what they're doing for privacy. Maybe a registrar in the Caymans or something will make more sense for you.
