OK, I dunno if you guys know, but in Australia, we like coffee... as in, we REALLY like coffee. I read somewhere that we actually consume almost as much tonnage of coffee beans as the USA.
Anyway, I figure I'll swing by StarBucks this morning.
Not because I actually like their coffee (it's way too sweet), but because I like their muffins, and I had a $5 muffin+coffee coupon so I figured why not...
Why not indeed! As it turns out, no one there understands what the hell a "flat white" is, even though it's clearly on the menu.
(For those not in the know, flat white is your basic espresso coffee shot + milk and the foam can go screw itself). I get served something that's foam maybe a 3rd of the way down.
I tell the counter guy that this is wrong and ask him to make it again. It comes back the same... So I ask him if he's aware of what a "flat white" is, and how it should be made. He says the manager told him that "it's just a latte with less foam".
Never mind the fact he's served me enough foam for this to almost be a cappuccino, IT IS NOT A FREAKIN "LATTE WITH LESS FOAM"!!!
So I quickly googled "flat white how to" on my phone and came up with this:
http://www.espressocoffeesnobs.com/espresso-drinks-with-milk/how-to-make-a-flat-white.htm
He looks at it. He calls the manager... They confer... Manager comes up to me "Sorry sir, but that's not how WE make them"
Me →
So, moral of the story, StarBucks is not only crappy coffee, they don't even know how to make a cup if the machine doesn't have a button for it.
I'm going back to my local cafe, even if the cups are half the size and the staff are uptight Greeks with their black coffee.
