She was the first face transplant in America and she had to have 80% of her face replaced. That's a good bit better than what she had. She was living on the left like that for 4 years before she had the surgery in 2008.

She's since had more surgeries and looks a bit different than what's shown in the image of her on the right in the OP.

Her husband was later convicted of aggravated attempted murder and sentenced to seven years in prison. No, that’s not a typo. Just seven years for shooting his wife’s face completely off.
