Facebook comment system for wordpress?

Broadly speaking is there anything I need to be aware of, or are there any massive limitations I'm overlooking if I were to make the switch from default wordpress comments to facebook's system?

So far I've figured:

  • Can't save comments locally, so no switching, and will lose what meagre comments I have
  • No control of external code
  • Privacy/Data tracking
But on the plus side:

  • Commenter's are auto signed in assuming they never log out of fb
  • Adds faces/social proof much better than gravatard
  • Recognisable brand/trust
  • Eases server load slightly

I've considered Disqus and Livefyre, and think they have too much sign-in options for an audience which isn't massively tech-savvy, and hasn't often got a desire for anonymity.

Thoughts before I test? I couldn't find much discussion using search...

Do not switch, but rather have both options. Remember that some people prefer to comment anonymously and some people do not have fb accounts.

^good idea, although make sure whatever secondary commenting system you're using isn't a bloated piece of shit. Page speed degradation is often a huge problem when running two comment platforms.

Thanks for the responses guys, some food for thought there.

Did some more research and it appears as if Facebook comments aren't SEO friendly out of the box. They're delivered via an iframe, and unlike Disqus which is similar, they don't get added to the html as plain text for crawling.

There is a work around so I will see how it goes. My on-site comment game is weak...

I hate FB's comment system. Users can login with their Facebook with Disqus. It doesn't appear that hard, anyone willing to comment should be able to figure out to click "Login", or can just start typing then they will get prompted to login with one of their social accounts.
