This is pretty unreal.. But true..

ADOTAS — A Spam judge has whacked a spammer for hacking into Facebook and sending sexually explicit messages to the social network’s members.

Friday, federal Judge Jeremy Fogel awarded Facebook $873 million in damages against Adam Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital. According to the social network, it is the largest award ever under the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM).

According to Max Kelly, Facebook’s director of security, the company doesn’t expect to ever collect the money but believes it will be a powerful deterent to anyone who messes with the company or its users.

“Everyone who participates constructively in Facebook should feel confident that we are fighting hard to protect you against spam and other online nuisances,” Kelly blogs. “We will continue to invest in this area by improving our technical safeguards and devoting significant resources to finding, exposing and prosecuting the sources of spam attacks.”

In May, Myspace won a $230 million spamming judgement against notorious spammer Sanford Wallace and his partner Walter Rines.

Jeesh, How in the world do you justify $873/mill in damages? Thats crazy! But Iḿ sure if it was me I would find one way or another to get as much as I can to.

prolly not even going to recover 1% of that

the $873M is justified because the number is set so high they are going to get as much of ABC's assets as they can

Here's my question about all these spammers that get busted: why are they so stupid?

Specifically, why would they think it's safe to operate a "project" like this from their home countries (US, Canada in this case)?

It's like holding up a huge sign with "PLEASE RAPE ME" written on it.

I don't endorse what they do, but jesus fucking H.

It's not exactly rocket science to think to yourself, "Hmm, maybe I should hide my tracks when engaging in this highly illegal activity."

Nahhhhhh, just do it, everything will be coooool maaann.

Elime, computer forensics guys have big balls too. They know the exact same stuff spammers and scammers do, they just apply them to different situations. It is not that easy to hide your tracks. In the end, the only true protection you have is if your country does not give a shit and tells them to fuck off.

Takes a hacker to stop a hacker ;)

I'd have to say that greed does a very good job of clouding judgement.

Someone who doesn't get caught after hacking a few accounts and making a few bucks spends most of their time thinking about all the money they'll have if they significantly ramp up their activities, instead of thinking about covering their tracks.

Not only that, I'm sure that when they are small time and are going unnoticed, they develop feelings of invincibility and arrogance and figure there's NO way they'll get caught.

Spoken like someone who doesn't understand money trails and lawyers.

i agree that is a ridiculous amount, i guarantee they didnt make 25% of that spamming the site.

im wondering why fb didnt go after the advertiser for letting them do it instead of the ones who wrote the apps and carried it out? must have been alot of traffic to justify 900 million fucking dollars imo the advertises must have been a little curious as to where all of it was coming from.

i mean fuck anyone with a recaptcha ocr, a boatload of proxies and knowledge of a programming language could have done this. the advertiser is to blame! haha. cmon give these guys some sympathy they are just trying to make a buck- porn was probably the wrong way to do it though and wouldnt look exactly innocent to the law.
