I applaud them for this. About damn time.

Because clearly nobody would know smoking is bad for them without this. The American Heart Association, American Lung Association, decades of independent research, the TRUTH campaigns, and various other non-profits don't exist.

No we need more nanny state.

I would call bullshit if it wasn't on the FDA site. I don't smoke, and I hate cigarettes, but this is insane.

Pretty soon new cars will come with a permanent picture on the dash of a crash victim to remind me to wear my seatbelt.

Those are weak, check out a few of the Australian warnings...

Everyone knows they cause lung cancer, but not everyone knows they can cause blindness, gangrene, mouth cancer, heart disease etc. That might be the difference between continuing to smoke and quitting. To be fair, it certainly hasn't stopped my friends. The government wants to enforce plain packing next, just a plain white packet with a simple brand name printed on it along with the graphic images. Big tobacco retaliated with this commercial about being a nanny state...

smoking causes blindness? that's a very affirmative statement, not "can cause", no asterisk.

oh I get it - affiliates can't make false advertisements, but governments can.

Non profits don't have the power to post their message on the actual cigarette cartons.

It's here with study references... so it's not totally bullshit.

I'm not on either side here, if people want to still smoke thats fine. There's laws against smoking in bars\clubs and indoor public places here so it doesn't affect me at all. None of my family members smoke either so I have nothing to worry about.

Australia has this already, we're also hopefully moving to plain packaging in the near future. Does it make a difference? Honestly it's hard to say, it's unlikely to make a difference to those already smoking but in my opinion it does help with youngsters who don't already smoke.

I'm sure this idea will get slammed on WF, but if it makes any tangible difference to preventing somebody from smoking in the future then it's a job well done.

I remember crying inside when they shut down the smoking lounge in Vegas' airport.

I blame this guy

lol, that's nothing. You want to see a bunch of pissed off smokers? Go to Springfield, Missouri. They just had a vote a few months ago and a city-wide smoking ban was passed. A hardcore ban... as in, no smoking in *any* public places, at all. Bars, restaurants, clubs, cigarette/cigar stores. It started this week, and from what I hear, the smokers are going batshit insane.
