Filed under: More examples of government waste

It happened all over the world. Croatia purchased about 1.5m of vaccines. Most of it will go to the garbage because response to vaccination was one big fail.
In Hungary, prime minister of health care gave resignation because of the overpriced dozes of this vaccine.

It's a good business model for pharmaceutical companies.

gg novartis, astrazeneca and others. You will always be in our hearts, and I mean that literally.

H1N1 was seriously hyped. At one point in the hysteria, I recall reading somewhere where they stated that 50% of people were going to contract it this winter.

Speaking of government waste, do you guys remember everytime we change the design of our currency how the government would go on an advertising blitz? I always thought that was incredibly stupid and wasteful, its not as if we have a choice in the currency we use.

Some of it has to do with them making the public aware of new designs to avoid confusion about it being counterfeit, but a lot of it has to do with the collector market - which they want as many people into as possible. Today's child collecting the state quarters might be someone who in the future would buy a special set of gold quarters or whatever else.

Government waste is sending two fuckin letters in the mail about the Census. The first one told me it was coming and the other told me it came already. Many millions wasted right there.

not to mention hundreds of millions spent on print media, internet media, tv spots, etc.... the list goes on.

the california unemployment department keeps saying it doesn't have enough money to pay the unemployed, yet i keep seeing their online media buys/banners telling people where to go to file a claim. wth?????

I heard a census ad on a rap radio station yesterday, rapping about the census and how it's important for "hospitals and your community nigga" <--- no joke

A press release/press conference gets every single media outlet reporting this anyway.

Yeah that was very stupid.

Sounds like the money spent on mailing out instructions for the stimulus check. I think they sent everyone like 2 letters plus the actual rebate check, and the cost of sending all of this out was something like 42$ Million dollars to send out these pre-notices.

Or what bout when FEMA spent $2.7 billion to buy 145000 mobile homes and trailers, and then it sits on an unused airfield where the city is billing 25,000$ per month to keep them there.

Hope has the largest stockpile of FEMA trailers, while others are stored at Selma, Ala.; Madison, Ind.; Cumberland and Frostburg, Md.; Carnes and Purvis, Miss.; Edison, N.J.; Jasper and Texarkana, Texas; and Fort Pickett, Va.

FEMA wants Hope to be a staging ground during disasters because it's close enough to the Gulf Coast to store trailers but far enough inland to be out of harm's way. The city is making the most of it, entering a $25,000-a-month contract with FEMA.

I mean its wasting money by the month when they could actually save money just giving the homes to people who need em, despite FEMA's own policy bout not putting homes in a flood plain.

Thought the same thing. I was in awe when I got something in the mail telling me I was going to get something in the mail. Baffling.

I didn't realize the Census forms are due today... reading over Yahoo's article posted today, it says there's a max fine of $5000 for those not sending it out. Of course, there are a bunch of things that have to happen first. They send a census taker to your house up to three times before giving up, and you're required by law to talk to them? WTF is this shit.

And I guess the commercials are just to make it all look like cotton candy. :P

Tomorrow is Good Friday. Do you think you could be a real "conservative" and actually go 24 hours without calling names, pointing fingers or all manner of rubbish...
I know I can certainly ignore Hellrazer, popeye and all your other clan's flames for 24 hours in order to be respectful of the time....

Just asking....

They had a census official on the Colbert Report and he basically said they split tested the return rate with and without the preview letter. The return rate increased enough with the letter that it saves them money as compared to sending out the census workers for revisits.

New movies get a lot of media coverage and so has the Snuggie, but they still pour money into advertising. I'm not saying the government is very concerned with their ROI, though.

Google "address canvassing." The census hires people to walk around neighborhoods and make sure the houses are still there. $480 million dollar budget this year.

Crazy idea - just ask the USPS. Damn I just saved us a half billion dollars.

They do get lists and help from the USPS, but then they still make them go around and verify it.

Also, according to this, 10 percent of residences don't have mail service :
