Alright, I have been doing some thinking today and I decided to go ahead and write out a quick guide of things that you should ask your web hosting provider or any web hosting provider that you're looking at obtaining web hosting from.

Hopefully, many will find this useful in picking out the jewels in the world of web hosting.

  1. Are you a licensed business?
First of all, it's important to know if the web hosting provider you choose is serious about conducting business. Being serious means being proactive about their company. This includes having appropriate licenses and any other memberships to business related organizations that the company may have.

You need to have the assurance that the company is licensed and plans on staying in business for the long run.
  2. Have you ever sold any of your customers?
You need to rest assured that you won't be sold off like a bad habit. It's as simple as that!
  3. Can you guarantee that you won't sell me in the long run?
This is something you want to make sure of, because you don't want to spend your time scaling and then experience the headache of transferring to another provider just because your host decided to close up shop.
  4. Do you have an uptime guarantee?
You can't make monies online if your sites are down all of the time. ;)
  5. Do you mind me being a pain in the ass?
Let's face it guys and gals! You're going to value having another set of eyes, ears, and brains to help you if the time comes and you need it. Hell, you may demand it all of the time.

But we all need hosting, so find a host that doesn't mind you being a pain in the ass for your sake.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot more that you need to keep in mind when it comes to choosing a web hosting provider, but without getting too technical this provides you with a general idea of how a hosting provider conducts business. You do want someone professional, right?

WTH?

1. What is a licensed business? There is no license you need to run a hosting business. And no license guarantees your viability. You need a data center and some good tech. This is a pointless point.

5. If you are a pain in the ass in any business I don't want you around. Being someone who asks a lot of questions is one thing. But you don't have to be a pain the ass about it. I've discovered in the past that the biggest pains in the asses are the ones that whine about price and are always hopping from hosting company to hosting company because they can save a dollar or two. A hosting company is not your personal servant. They are not your baby sitter. They are not here to teach you PHP or mysql or how to upload. If you are going to bitch because the hosting company won't teach you FTP 101 then maybe you should not be using a computer.

You must be a paid content writer.. right? This looks like a post I would pay $10 for 5 of to put on my content site to convince a noob to click on one of my hosting review links.

1) It's called incorporation or being a sole proprietor which is a local license that you need to obtain. You don't have to own the datacenter in order to be a true web hosting provider, just acquire appropriate licenses.

The hosting business is just like any other business, you have to legally let the government know the name you are doing business under and obtain the necessary licenses.

2) There will always be someone needing guidance and THAT IS ALWAYS A DAMN GOOD THING TO HAVE as a consumer. Don't bash others that may have little knowledge, a little reassurance about the way you do it may be what solves confusion.

3) As for being a content writer, I personally don't give a damn of your opinion. The reason for this is I have enough work to keep me writing forever if that's something that I wanted to do. This thread isn't meant to sell my content, as I don't even take new orders anymore, don't have to. As for the quality of my content, there's people that will tell you it is damn good, from WF members to WF mods.

Wrong. You don't need a local business license to be a sole proprietor in most cities. Especially for Internet based services.

As for taxes, again, you don't need a license to file taxes. You just file like everyone else. You can get an EIN if you really want to, but it's pointless.

I apologize, ok, you have to get one where it applies. For here, you have to obtain one, but then again it's how serious one is about doing business and protecting their own ass in the long run. Being an LLC helps that, but then again some may prefer not to have it. It just looks more legit if you are a licensed business.

As for sales taxes, you don't have to pay them for services rendered like web hosting (here in Oklahoma anyways, I don't know about other cities and states), but you have to personally file, so you have to pay in taxes. However, you do have to report your earnings legally. Both personally and as a company.

This fight between hosting companies is the gayest shit I've seen in a while. Fact is one of you gives a shit about his clients, his family, his kid, and WF members overall. The other one gives a shit about himself.... the choice is easy for me... I hang with people who have a good heart rather than someone who pretends to be my friend and then sells me when it feels good... This just reminds me of that one guy in art class in high school.... everyone had one at their high school... unfriendly, openly says hey i don't like the world... funny people kinda likeable but then after you become friends they do some terrible shit to you and then justify it by saying they don't give a shit... and you're like whoa I guess i learned my lesson.

lol... what the fuck are you talking about?

Well isn't that humorous - as I sit here in Oklahoma myself - Having licensed multiple businesses by going to the capitol on Lincoln and filing the paperwork. Which like I said before you don't need in the least to start or run a business. Just keep this in mind - how many people are going to go to the IRS and/or the Secretary of State to see if their hosting company is a registered business?

There are certain businesses that require licensing. Dealing with alcohol, food, firearms, etc. But hosting is not one of them. My point was it is not a bad idea, but it is far from required.

Either way, you have to report to the gov. ;) And as far as going to the SOS, now that it's mostly online, probably the ones that like doing their homework about providers to gain that extra blanket of security.

Agreed - it does give an extra 1% at least to the feeling that someone is in the biz to stay in it, at least in my opinion. So i like that... rather than....

Hey Mitch whats goin on man?
Not much.... you lookin to buy some pop? It's warm though, cause this is a half ass commitment

Who still uses hosting companies anymore? Get yourself a dedicated server or a fucking VPS. Shared hosting died out in 2004.

LOL. Websicosys, dedicated servers and VPS's are forms of hosting and part of hosting companies. heh.

If hosting is dead, why are we still online? That's like saying computers are dead. You're here on a website using the internet which is powered by various types of hosting. Sorry couldn't resist. :P
