There's a series of documentaries called Legends of the UnWired that have interviews with the real people behind the characters on the show.

This one is being released this week:

Discover the incredible true story of the Baltimore drug kingpin who served as the inspiration for a key figure in the first season of THE WIRE. Back in the 1980s, the Lexington Terrace Projects was one of the most dangerous areas in Baltimore. Much to the chagrin of the local authorities, Nathan Avon "Bodie" Barksdale, owned the streets. In this documentary, Barksdale speaks with actor Wood Harris (who portrayed the drug dealer in THE WIRE) about his violent past.

They also have one in the works on Marlo, who was supposedly a combination of 2 different people.
