Some of you may be following the recent drama unfolding with our military commanders with regard to the war in Afghanistan. The players in the spotlight: General Stanley McCrystal on the left, General David Petraeus on the right...

The drama thus far...

- General McCrystal, formerly head of U.S. Forces in the Afghan theater, has been fired. The reason? This interview.

- General Petraeus, formerly Commander of U.S. Central Command, has replaced McCrystal.

Both are generally well-regarded in the halls of power, though Petraeus is more of a household name than McCrystal.

Fred Kaplan has a piece at Slate that offers a bird's-eye view of the challenges posed by the Afghan theater in light of the recent change in personnel. His piece avoids addressing the reasons for our involvement. Instead, it focuses on strategy. It's a good read if you have a few minutes.
