Lawmakers in New York are in a lather because citizens on their phones and iPods are causing a safety issue. So, for the good of society, they're gonna do something about it.

From here:

Many joggers don earbuds and listen to music to distract themselves from the rigors of running. But might the Black Eyed Peas or Rihanna distract them so much that they jog into traffic?

That is the theory of several lawmakers pushing the latest generation of legislation dealing with how devices like iPods and cellphones affect traffic safety. The ubiquity of interactive devices has propelled the science of distraction — and now efforts to legislate against it — out of the car and into the exercise routine

In New York, a bill is pending in the legislature’s transportation committee that would ban the use of mobile phones, iPods or other electronic devices while crossing streets — runners and other exercisers included. Legislation pending in Oregon would restrict bicyclists from using mobile phones and music players, and a Virginia bill would keep such riders from using a “hand-held communication device.”
lol at politicians. Don't they ever get tired of playing slave-master?

Remember, liberty is taken one small slice at a time. Next time you vote, remind yourself that you're screwing all of us.

So we shouldnt vote and just let them do whatever they want that much faster?

Once you arrive at the conclusion that voting merely perpetuates the system of slavery to the state, the only solution becomes to demolish the system. I don't believe a violent uprising will work. At least, not in a functioning democracy.*

This guy gets it right. From the linked piece:

Not only is it impossible for "government" to be used to support freedom, but playing the tyrants' games, by supporting this or that candidate, or pushing for this or that legislation, only LEGITIMIZES the notion that politicians have some divine right to rule.

A lot of liberty-minded people "run for office" with the best of intentions, when what they should be doing is running FROM "office" as fast as they possibly can. What they fail to understand is that the problem is not the particular lying crook that happens to currently occupy that office; THE PROBLEM IS THE OFFICE ITSELF. Every "election" is nothing but a ritual designed to legitimize a ruling class, to make it look like the master somehow has the "consent" of his victims, or somehow "represents" them. It's nothing but a show, designed to redirect any discontent among the peasants into completely ineffectual and fruitless endeavors (voting and lobbying). In other words, it offers the slaves a means of "redress" that never accomplishes anything, but gives them an outlet for their displeasure with the masters, so they don't resort to actual resistance.

* Yes, I know we're technically a republic.

Don't they ever get tired of playing slave-master?
Fuck no! These are the type of people who can't get to sleep at night unless they have the feeling of control...

I need to have my iPod on for everything exercise-related. It gets me pumped, and it gets me going. If these people have that much of a problem with using an iPod while exercising, it's their problem, not the peoples'.

Even if this law gets passed, I'm sure it won't be enforced. I'm pretty sure that jay-walking is a ticketable offense, but after 15 years of living in Manhattan, I've yet to receive/see anyone receive a citation. Even still, banning iPods and phones while crossing the street? "Oh wait, I'm walking into an intersection, let me call you back in 17 seconds."

WTF?

I'd be glad if the police would be paying attention to the fuckers using cells and laptops in their car while driving.
