Generally, just write the article and link it up to your money site so that you multiple ways to rank on the first page. If ezine gets on the first page, you will still benefit from the traffic.

Ezine articles rank high because it's a big website so has a lot of trust in Googles eyes. So, what you need to do is write an article around a specific keyword and include it in the title, first paragraph and last paragraph and then hit it up with one or two links and viola ranking!
I'd be willing to bet that one of the reasons ezine does so well in the serps is also because of how strict their moderation policies are. Google will take notice of those kinds of practices on the big sites and give them priority because they know that those sites are doing the spam/quality filtering for them
Heres an even better trick: Get an exact match domain name with .com, .net or .org. If you have the EXACT domain name without hypens you will rise to the top of Google very quickly without any links. Its a great little trick if you can find domains where the exact match keyword/domain hasnt been taken yet.

yea i seen lots of website rank well when they have the whole keyword on the domain. I got articles on the first page of Google using article base 2. What i did was put the keyword i wanted to rank for in the tittle, the intro of the article and in the anchor text link. I was able to hit the first page of Google with low keyword competion
Some of those guys are just using a type of parasite SEO to get ezine articles to rank. You essentially have a page on an authority's site and shoot a bunch of backlinks at it - it'll then rank fairly easily. Check the article's backlinks and that's probably what it is.
