You don't have to wait until tomorrow to get iPhone 2.0. You can download and install it to a first-generation iPhone right now.

WARNING: Back up your iPhone before hand!!

1. Sync your iPhone with the current version of iTunes -- this is to make sure that all your data is backed up.
2. Download iTunes 7.7. This is the version of iTunes with support for the App Store. Double-click the installation package to upgrade iTunes.
3. Download the install package for iPhone 2.0. It's a 225-MB file and the server may be pretty busy, so be prepared to wait. The file should have a .ipsw extension. If it has a .zip extension, remove that part of the extension.
4. Connect your iPhone to your computer and select it in the iTunes window. Hold down the Option button (Shift button for Windows users) as you click on the Check for Updates button.
5. A dialog box will pop up. Use it to select the iPhone 2.0 install package you just downloaded.
6. Once your iPhone has been updated, it should be ready to go. Be patient: It took about 15 minutes to complete the process on my iPhone.
7. Once the update is complete, iTunes will ask you if you want to set up your iPhone as a new phone, or restore the backup that you did in step 1. Obviously, you'll want to restore from the backup. That will require another sync.
8. Now you're ready to start getting iPhone apps onto your phone. Not seeing the App Store in iTunes? Click on this link: iTunes App Store
9. Browse the 550+ applications (including 135 free ones) that are already available for download, and have fun!

enjoy!
Warning this only works with at&t so If you already have a jailbroken iPhone DO NOT DO THIS.

It works i tested it myself promise lol

also it worked on the first try just download the file and point itunes to update from it then re sync all the goods and your good to go

Similar, but different, if you've got an iPod Touch, but no iPhone, you might want to consider a little mod that allows you to VOIP over your Touch

Feature: Turn Your iPod Touch into an iPhone

I haven't tried it myself (no iPod Touch, already got an Mp4 player), but a friend of mine has, and it seems to work so long as the WiFi you're connected to actually delivers on the speed.

It works fine - reports coming in to not use it on jail broken phones . .

we are living in an iphone 2.0 world - very cool.

now how do we monetize it?

Lucky day. I accidentally destroyed my phone last night. 3g here I come.

I dropped my beat-up 1st gen phone in the toilet about two weeks ago and was able to get a free replacement under warranty (I love apple customer service). (Surprisingly, the phone still worked but the signal strength had noticeably diminished)

So I can totally go get the 3G, jailbreak the like-new 1st gen, and sell it for more than the price of the new one. Sweet!

I'm about to head to the local apple store. Any word of it selling out in any locations yet?

I did the same exact thing about a month ago. What's the deal with unlocked iPhones selling for $500+ on ebay? Looks like I'll probably unlock mine and sell it there, and just go buy a new iPhone 2

ok i just tried to install 2.0 on my 1st gen phone...everything went fine...until it went to connect to itunes store. now i cant activate...i have a bricked phone:( cannot connect to itunes store. anyone else experiencing this?
