I am looking at investing for the first time in my life and I don't really know where to start. I don't know shit about stocks, and Forex seems like you need at least 10k to actually make a profit.

I am looking for a good medium for investment, online or off.

Not a huge amount, a few grand at most.

Any ideas are appreciated, even the dumb ones (to an extent).

This is absolutely the worst and most difficult time to invest in our lifetimes. And forex is even more confusing than the stock market.

Look at the DJIA. Lowest in a decade... Japanese stock market lowest since 1982. Citibank was down 36% in a week and may close forever.

It might be a good opportunity but it is worse than a casino. I would not get in without expert advice. And stockbrokers typically lose money in a good market.

Don't.

I second domain names. I have done fairly decently there lately.

If you aren't opposed to risk and have some time, there are some serious bargains in the stock market. Pick up a book or two about how to read a balance sheet and look for major companies that are solvent and cheap. For example I really like Goldman Sachs right now. The price is cheap and they have proved repeatedly that they are a step or two ahead of the rest of the financial industry.

Today the S&P dropped below 700 for the first time since '96. Stay away from stocks unless you're okay with watching your money dwindle away day by day. Hide your money under your mattress next to your gun collection. You'll be better off.

thats fucking terrible advice

buy stocks, they might not be this cheap again in your lifetime

It was slightly sarcastic advice, but I'd really hold out on buying. They're low now. They'll be lower a few months from now, guaranteed. And again, a few more months down the road.

If you're a Costco member, head over there and go get a Sharebuilder account. Automatic investing every week for free, plus you get $60 for signing up as a Costco member.

It's been nice. I just auto-deposit every few weeks.

Not a bad point. It seems like the rest of this year will be driven by news & politics as opposed to profits & business: The window to buy low should be open for a while.

i can't (and don't try to) time peaks or bottoms, you're probably right but things are quite cheap right now.

If you are doing AM already then why not reinvest that and make even more. If not buy some domain names or established web sites.

Investment Ideas

Actually Drake said it well. This is the worst time to invest in something, because everything seems to be not working. But here's the thing, usually when people think of investing they always think they need a capital, but what about skills or talents right?

I'm talking about considering blogging as an investment. You can make use of your wit, writing skills, creativity and other stuffs without even spending some... and trust me, you will earn money. You just have to research on a lot of things though. First, you'll be earning just enough to pay your hosting server (if you want to have your own instead of using free blogs), then the next thing you know, you're earning more than you think you can.

The internet has a lot of possibilities. Might as well check them out. :)

I think we can take it for granted that s/he is looking for an alternative to internet monies.

invest in yourself

the markets can suck it.

invest in yourself. start a biz, run some sort of game, do an advanced degree, go to trade shows, network.

spend your money building value on your own, rather than lending it to someone else with they hope they'll build it for you.
