Good Longe Range Router

I need a good router with as wide a possible range (one that can easily be hacked for increased range acceptable, but prefer plug and go.

My house is 5700 square feet, three floors, no cat wiring built in. I can go one router per floor if I need, but I'd prefer to stick one on a the main level and call it good (I have to run a wire to my office regardless as it's concrete walls on three sides (office is a bunker!).

My good one died a few days ago, and I've been working off this shitty old one that doesn't even cover one floor.

Recommendations?
 


Noob, any router can get a boost.

1. Check your router's documentation - specifically how to adjust the xmit power. You can usually get this to a max of around 50mW.

2. Replace the antennae with a higher capacity one. Make sure you get a router that can actually let you do this.

3. You will need a wifi repeater. You'll need the DD-WRT + another router. It's open source. Install it on the spare router and use it as a repeater. It's fucking easy but there are a bunch of sites out there that go into details. I'd recommend linksys.

4. If you still are out of range, you'll need a bi-directional amplifier. They aren't terribly expensive but you'll be out of probably a bill.

That should cover your hovel.
 
 
I have a rather big home as well, and bought a repeater. What it does obviously, is repeats the signal from your existing modem. PM me and ill give you the direct link of the one I have. It cost about $55bux from bestbuy.

I've linked additional routers as well as computers with them.
 
I had some issues and picked up a Netgear N600. Did the trick and I get 4 bars in places I was getting none. This is going through multiple exterior block walls. Give something like this a shot and buy from Bestbuy, you can always return it the next day.
 
The electrical jack is a good option in big houses. You get a true wired connection instead of flaky WiFi. You won't get the full 100mbps, but its still faster that 802.11g.

If you gotta go WiFi get 802.11n stuff, the range is better, and its faster.
