End of the rainbow
One of the things I've always wanted to do is get a little better with Photoshop so I can whip out quick graphics and landing pages etc. without having to wait for some flaky designer. Can anyone recommend any good Photoshop tutorials or online "classes"? I know the very basics, just want to take the next step...

Just look up a book on amazon, check the reviews, and get one if you like books. I never had one, learned by just following online tutorials pretty much and messing around in it. Look up "photoshop glossy button tutorial" or whatever else you need, go through a few and follow step by step thinking about why certain things are the way they are.

just google tutorials for whatever you want to learn on google. There's plenty and it's not hard to tell if they are any good with a quick look. it's especially easy if you have two monitors.

Gradients, drop shadows, reflections, and glossy buttons can pretty much make a nice looking site.

Like other guys are saying, you can learn as you go along. I'll admit that I learned the basics of PS in high school just by dicking around and trying to Photoshop my friends' heads onto random celebrities lol.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going through a lot of this but it's slow going. A lot of it is just random "tips and tricks" ... maybe I just haven't gotten to what I'm looking for yet.

At least in my case, what happens a lot is I see an image and say "shit I wish I knew how to do that". For example I'm looking at an image right now that a designer created, that needs a ton of changes. If I knew WTF I was doing I'm sure I could do it myself in 10 minutes. But no, I'm going to waste at least an hour or more going back and forth with the designer until it's finally right.

What would be awesome would be a site or service where you could submit an image, and a photoshop expert would show you on video how to re-create that image from scratch. I would pay for such a service.

Seriously, I bet I could find 10 images that cover all the Photoshop skills I want to learn. If I could see a pro create these 10 images from scratch on video, I'd be set. As it is I'm sure it would take dozens or hundreds of hours of pouring through books and tutorials to learn these X number of specific skills/tricks/tactics that I want to learn.

(BTW if any designers out there are up for it, I have this image sitting right in front of me if you're interested in doing this as a one-off thing. I can learn some new skillz and you can earn some cash. PM me!)

Lynda would be your best bet... and yes it will take some time. Your other option is to youtube each function or design you are trying to master. Most of the people who make the videos don't speak English and if they do it's broken. There's sounds of gay sex in the background.

Plenty of youtube videos showing you how to do photoshop stuff, plus lynda stuff is great. Go visit the bookstore look at all the photoshop books on "how-to", it's endless.

But the real problem is your not a graphics designer so stop wasting your time thinking your going to be one unless you have years to dedicate. Either pay someone to build it or buy pre-built clipart and modify it with basic photoshop skills. Plenty of cheap art available.

I almost think this is a troll thread against designers (flaky or otherwise). You're really just going to sit with someone for a quick demo and learn in an hour what others have spent "dozens or hundreds of hours of pouring through books and tutorials to learn these X number of specific skills/tricks/tactics"? Never mind actual actual artistic talent which not everyone has no matter how many books they read.

A ton of changes in Photoshop don't typically take 10 minutes. You could waste an hour with your designer doing what they do or you can spend the next 4 or 5 years learning all the ins and outs of Photoshop and the multitude of techniques and tricks to achieve what it is you're trying to do.

If your designer is a flake, find a better one, or bite the bullet and make the commitment you need to make to truly master what is another entire skillset.

Our local high school has photoshop classes that are pretty helpful. I took them 10+ years ago and learned a lot of basic photoshop stuff. It's like programming learn the basic tools and what you do with them is up to your imagination.

Ideally, figure out what you want to accomplish then google it and look on youtube there's tons of tutorials free.

PS books were always tooooo slow paced for me.
