Google Keyword Tool - Very Newbie Question

I searched on both Google and WF for this answer but did not find it.

When typing a phrase into the tool for example, soy chicken recipes, the results show many suggested keywords. One of which is "chicken recipes". Is the search number listed for chicken recipes supposedly the number of times only the 2 specific words chicken recipes was typed into google or is it an aggregate of all the times people typed anything like -> soy chicken recipes + chicken recipes + fried chicken recipes etc?

In other words is it the aggregate of all times chicken recipes was typed in regardless of other words in the same search or is it just the times chicken recipes was typed in with no other words?

on broad match yes. Switch the tool to exact match to get a better estimate
