So obviously everyone knows that Google now provides quantified data on keywords. I was doing some keyword research the other day and started to wonder how much of search volume is actually just peeps like us doing keyword research and not consumers looking to buy our shit. What percentage of volume do you guys think is the real deal?

I doubt it's significant compared to the everyday natural searches for most keywords.

Agreed, we live with tunnel vision with affiliate marketing our lives without the realization that there are tens of millions out there that have no clue what keyword research is or even cognizance about the existence of affiliate marketing

I think you guys may be right, especially for higher volume, shorter tail keywords. Sometimes doing research on long tails for niches it seems like some keywords are obviously just figments of our marketing minds.

Some keywords were obvioulsy built around the product right after an offer is is introduced on NB, COPEAC, Azoogle, etc. You know those longer tail keywords that have the affiliate marketing flavor to them. Something like "product abc review" or "product xyz scam". And then when you look at the search volume trend graphs, there are clearly spikes when certain offers are released.

For almost all niches, I would guess it's insignificant. However, I did notice that Keyword Discovery (paid version) recently switched their default database from the global database to the premium, because they felt the global had a lot of "search engine noise" from stuff like automated queries.

After the switch, I noticed that almost all the keywords I work with dropped in estimated volume (obviously, since there are fewer searches in the premium database), however, the changes definitely weren't proportional for all niches. When I started checking out volumes in each database on stuff like seo, viagra, forex, and ringtones, the difference was enormous.

So yes, I think that human or automated queries to check rankings can make a big difference on certain things, but is Google filtering those out somehow? Hard to say...maybe if someone took the time to check the premium Keyword Discovery database against terms in Google to get an idea of whether the predicted volumes are proportional, you could see if the viagra/seo/forex type stuff is similarly proportional or likely to be tainted by rank-checking queries - but I don't know how accurate that would be, or if it would even really matter that much.
