So Google QS determines you have to pay $5 a click for a keyword no one else is bidding on.

If you bid $5 for the clicks, does this mean you HAVE to pay $5 a click or if there's no competition will the actual cost be lower?

I just happened to see another post where someone said they had to bid $5 per click but ended up paying closer to $1.25-$1.50 per click.

So the whole bidding just above your competition to get placement doesn't apply anymore when it comes to landing pages with poor QS?

Depends on competition and QS, from what I can tell. I've had campaigns that had killer CTR (around 40%), and was charged about 25-30% of bid in some what high competition. Then I've also had campaigns in low competition when first starting that I paid 100% of my bid, because QS was low.

Reason I'd say it depends on competition is because I've found that having a 1-2 spot makes a large difference in CTR and thus QS is affected.

Depends on a few factors, but quite possibly.
