I thing I see happening is users' profile pages will grow in page rank, just like in Digg and other social sites. Exposure on these profile pages could possibly be used to game search results through the use of Google juice and high PR links.

This is actually a pretty cool change.. it'll be interesting to see how this plays out and if we can find some way to exploit it.

I think Google will be very, very careful about this. This could be highly exploitable..

1.Google comes up with a "fix"
2.SEOers use this fix to further manipulate the rankings
3. ???
4. PROFIT

I watched the demo video on Google's announcement post. All I could think was, "When the fuck am I ever going to care about ONE SERP enough to bother annotating it?" Google's spending too much time trying to switch from being a bridge to being the destination.

Not once they start using the "rankings" of each person and using them as a portion of their site ranking algo...

You know there IS a purpose to sites like DIGG, StumbleUpon, etc... besides spamming your websites for promo. Hundreds of thousands of people actively participate because... they like to. Yahoo Buzz? Same deal...

It would be a funny day in Google Land if they DID incorporate this into all SERPs... and everyone voted all the Wikipedia articles to the top.... which, honestly, could happen.

Well just post boobies on every page. Since everybody knows females don't use the interwebs, all of the men will be like, "Z0mG b00bies!!" and vote your page up. So:

1) Post boobs on all pages
2) ???
3) Profit!

Well another issue with this is that the "tech savvy" people will use this tool considerably more than the average joe, much like Digg.

As a result searches will become geared towards the desires of a subset as opposed to the masses.

Honestly I don't think they are going to put much weight on this for serps because it's way too easy to game. Just make a hidden bot, bundle it with some porn, have 5000 people download it, have the "porn viewer.exe" trick them into registering a google account, have it perform random searchs + votes to avoid detection, then have it connect back to your site where you have a database of search terms and sites to vote up and start ranking.

I think google will only use this is as "stalking data" so they know what type of sites you search for and what kind of ads to show you.

One thing they could possibly do is take heavier note on the amount of "X"'s a site receives.. if it's a shitty obviously spammy made for adsense site, combined with other factors like bounce rate, could hurt you dirty blackhatting bastards ;)

This could be the base for many huge technologies to come. I agree with trigatch that it could play a role in the algorithm down the line. Google maybe using that data to further analyze search behavior, what people need, more targeted results. Who knows, it may lead to each user having their own search results, based on their search behavior.

I can't see how this would affect our SEO efforts though, and how we promote our sites.

Google should have continued answers. Yahoo Answers is pretty damn popular and it always seems to be somewhere in the Top 10 SERPS for things I search for...

Google's "paid answers" model was a wee-bit different, but compelling and helpful nonetheless.
