I was in it back when it was called grand central so I didn't have to wait for an account.
I don't think there are member invites like gmail has.
Just sign up and wait for google to give you a number.
I use it for pretty much every call I make these days.

There's a few threads about this already. I've had an account for three years and Google took our invites away over a year ago. If you want an account, sign up for the waiting list and you'll eventually get one.
I signed up and it only took 10 to get my invite. https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/

If you don't like to sign up at google and wait for google voice invite like we all had to, just go to the Google Voice Invite Spinner, do 30 spins and get an instant link.
I use google voice to handle all my business phone calls. it's amazing. I wish I'd used it all along for everything. you can have it screen calls for you. you can have it call multiple phones. so if you have a few people working for you, when people call your google line, it will call all of them.
