I think the answer depends on what you are trying to accomplish and in what time frame. The EMD will rank faster, and if you are looking to "rank and bank", that seems like it would be the best bet. However, if you are actually looking to build an authority site, and not looking for quick results, you don't need to go with an EMD necessarily.

I've got an www.awesomefancyname.org site as my authority site and I use the /keyword to rank for heaps for long tails and even high search term words.

Lke ^^^^ said, if you want to build an authority site, I'd go for the fancy name as it lets you rank for lots of keywords but if you just want to rank and bank, get the EMD.

Thank you guys!

@Louey: Do you think it is possible to get the EMD out there, but then Also rank your authority site on the same term? The niche is not tested by me so i don't know how it converts, so another way would be to see if the emd will bring any money on 1 keyword and then either scale it out or build an authority site altogether. what do you guys think?

I'm thinking the same thing. I want the EMD boost for the domain in the beginning.

Although the domain will be EMD, I am going to brand the actual site (title, graphics, newsletters, email, etc). The brand domain will be 301'd to the EMD to catch type-ins.

Once the site is built out to a hundred pages, and if I see most visitors using either the brand or longtails to get to the site, I'll 301 the EMD to the brand domain and just take whatever punishment google throws at me.

If it's a decent niche that also has EMD's available, but you'd like a brandable domain, buy them all.

Add content to your branded site and keep at it. Build out your EMDs. Rank them. Over time (not all at once) link them to your branded site's corresponding keyword pages. At some point down the road, you hopefully have multiple listings in the SERPs with your branded domain and EMDs taking up a larger portion of the pie. This also gives you multiple entry points to your branded site and multiple sites to test things on like monetization and linking strategies.
A network of sites in a niche is a valuable asset, but it's not worth the time for a small niche generally.

Got it. If the niche, lets say finance, and you are trying to rank for "option trading" and saturate it, given your advise you might be able to go and try to rank for "trading" if things go well. There are so many layered niches! Thank you!
