Last person to successfully take over Afghanistan was Alexander The Great, back when it was Bactria.
Check out "The Man Who Would Be King" with Sean Connery and Michael Caine in their primes. It's based on the Rudyard Kipling book about a couple of Masons in colonial India who go off to Afghanistan to become kings. There's a big shout-out to Alexander the Great in it.
