A 17-year-old west suburban man was held on $3 million bail Wednesday after being charged with attempted murder and several other felonies for allegedly spraying his 3-year-old niece with lighter fluid and setting her on fire.

Raymundo Herrera of the 1200 block of Grove Street in Aurora was charged Wednesday with two counts of attempted murder and one count each of heinous battery, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery, according to a release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

All of the charges are felonies, with the attempted murder and heinous battery charges being Class X felonies which call for extended prison terms upon conviction.

Judge James Murphy set bond for Herrera at $3 million during a Wednesday hearing, according to Kane County State's Attorney's office spokesman Chris Nelson. He will appear for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 21 before Judge Thomas Mueller.

Just after 7 p.m. Monday, Aurora police and paramedics responded to Herrera's home and learned that the child had been upstairs with him. After a short amount of time, she came running downstairs with her clothing on fire, the release said.

Two of the girl's female relatives, ages 19 and 50, extinguished the flames and called 911. It was at that time that Herrera left the home, but was found by family members walking in the neighborhood shortly after the incident, the release said. The family members brought him back to the scene.

Herrera was apparently upset that the child interrupted him when he was listening to music, so he allegedly sprayed lighter fluid on her and lit her on fire, the release said. The girl suffered third-degree burns over 18 percent of her body and remains at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Aurora Fire Department Arson Investigators, the Kane County Child Advocacy Center and the state Department of Children and Family Services are assisting in the investigation.

Given the nature of the crime, why even bother with allowing bail? This is just bout as sick as the guy who killed his 2 year old step daughter because she wasn't saying things like 'please', 'sir', 'thank you' etc.

Wait wait... It's illegal to set little kids on fire???

SINCE WHEN????

FUCK THE POLICE!!!!!

Number one shut the fuck up, sometimes you gotta leave the jokes alone.

In the US we have violence that is skyrocketing and it is because our court systems and the punishments are so lenient. It may not stop them all but a lot of crime would be stopped if they received punishment aside from getting three meals a day, shelter, a tv, and snacks for free the rest of their lives.

This story would have been the biggest national news piece this week if she had disturbed him while playing WOW instead of listening to music.

Once he is convicted, he will be suffering for many years ...Based on an interior hierarchy. Inmates who commit crimes against children are the lowest in the chain. He will be "reminded" on a daily basis of what he has done.

No matter what, this will never be enough for what he has done to this child.

Hi everyone, I'm new here as you probably noticed. I was looking for information on how to add a signature when I came across this horrible story.

Firstly,
They should light him on fire and put him out. Let him heal. Rinse, repeat.
I second that notion, especially the rinsing and repeating.:disgust:

Secondly,
How did this happen? How could things have gone this far? The parents or guardians of this 17-year-old male didn't notice they had a sick bastard in their home? With disturbing attacks like this, this couldn't have been the first time that boy did something that should have had him put in a mental institution, or jail, for the rest of his life. And he was left around a small child that cannot defend herself. The parents or guardians should be brought up on charges of the highest degree of negligence. They knew he was a problem. If you have the ability to pour lighter fluid on an innocent 3-year-old child, then proceed to light that innocent child on fire with the intent of a slow painful death, what other sick madness and havoc wreaking had he already been doing during all 17 years of his existence?

I really hope the justice system handles this to the furthest extent possible. This boy should never be put back on the street, ever to see the light of day again.

I agree with Rogue Girl, this kid obviously had issues and I am sure they where apparent before this incident.

Even if this was true what would it have to do with this case? You think this guy sat down and thought about the consequences and then decided they were lenient enough to go ahead? You think he's just getting a slap on the wrist now?

I have a problem with arguments like the above because they take accountability away from the individual. If everyone is just a criminal waiting to be properly punished then it is practically expected of me to commit crime. We should reinforce the fact that we expect each other to do the right thing as a society. Threat of punishment is not effective because it simply asks someone to look out for their own comfort as opposed to making a choice because it is right/wrong.
