Who cares. Few people get the flu and they are going mad covering up their noses wearing masks. A billion people have aids and yet no one wants to wear a condom!
Yeah, but AIDS is a disease that only affects brown people, so it's not an issue.
I'm no racist to be clear - the above statement is intended to be political satire - and it is frequently true - at least in the US. If a major problem is affecting our "friends" (usually white Europeans) then it's a major problem.
If it's affecting minor/weak nations (aka, all of Africa with the possible exception of Egypt) then it's ignored. Especially something AIDS which is obviously only spread by sinners who engage in teh gay butt sex.
As it happens the racial makeups of those two groups tend to be split as well - hence the earlier statement.
Anyone who's read about AIDS for more than 10 seconds knows the reasons for it's spread are VERY complex, including rampant local mythology (ie, sex with a virgin cures you), political incompetence (I think it was South Africa where the government could cure you by drinking some local thing), religious insanity (handing out condoms will just doom the locals souls - best to let them die of AIDS instead so they can repent while they die). Add on top of that a complete lack of modern medical care and a lack of understanding of microbes and transmission mechanisms throughout the public.
US foreign policy on these matters makes me freakin' crazy. AIDS is the biggest epidemic the world has ever seen (with the possible exception of Celine Dion).
