I have a freelance developer creating something for me and so far I have invested a few thousand $ in it. How can I tell him not to give the same product to someone else who posts a similar project?

In exchange, I offer some tits:

If it were me you were talking about, you'd be shit out of luck. Unless you gave me a shitton of money and made me sign a contract.

as a programmer i'd say nothing can stop him. contracts are worthless. only way to make sure no one else has your code is to DIY.

Wtf is with you, didn't you read, or was that your big entry post to wickedfire!?
I guess its better then usual retardation, even tho you still did it in extremely retarded way!

In other words, contract will do nothing at all, no matter if he's down the street or in India. God damn, some of you are super naive.

You could ask him and rely on his goodwill - otherwise there is no practical way for you to do this.

That's the price you pay for using cheap overseas developers.

In the US (or EU), you'd get a proper contract drawn up which gives you all of the intellectual property rights for the software. And you'd pay heavily for it.

When I was in the software dev biz, the best we'd give is an unlimited license, and agreement not to sell to competitors for X years. No way would you get codebase ownership unless because most dev houses will be using their own pre-rolled foundation classes, which they reuse in other projects.

Agree with this one. If he is offshore, contracts are almost worthless. Build trust, get to know the freelancer, try to make sure that his word is worth more than a contract.

I wish I could unseen this...

that said, you need to use a reputable programmer... that's about the only advice I can give. The guys I usually use we make each other sign contracts, they came with a good recommendation, and I am confident that they haven't and won't reuse anything I've had them make.

I don't entirely agree with this. People in general are stupid and it may be enough to at least keep his programmer in check.
