I am interested in making a mobile app but have no idea on where to start on something like this effectively anyone have any advice to point me in the right direction?

You just wanna make "an APP", or you have any idea of what app you want to make?
Because if you have the specs, then you can easily get it made at odesk..

My advice, Hire your own programmar, don't try to learn it yourself.
Its going to save you a ton of headache.
Make sure your programmer can communicate well and is very willing to be flexible around you, because once its made your going to want to continuosly tweak it to perfection and this is where you need to be able to have a good communication connection with your designer.

Find a few free guides.
You need to think outside the box, what kind of apps are people looking for? What can be useful thats doesnt exist yet?
there are tons of ideas and things just waiting to be turned into apps.
Work with a programmer that you trust. heck you could even split the launch costs with him and give him have the app, should fuel him to design something better.

I tried a bunch of different websites to make mobile apps and none seemed to help. I thought maybe sites like Create an iPhone / Android App Online. EASY, FAST, RELIABLY! would help because you don't need any programming knowledge, but I don't think you can download the source and apk files.
I could probably learn creating my own apps using software like PhoneGap, but I just use odesk and freelancer. A lot of people will bid really high, so you just have to weed through the bad applications.

The author of that article also released a book on Kindle. I haven't read that book but a friend has and he says it is pretty good.
