I don't think they're saying that gays have been subject to treatment comparable to what the blacks went through; rather, that the discrimination they're subject to is similar in nature.

Civil Rights Movement: "Please accept blacks as equals"
LGBT: "Please accept gays as equals"

The traits for which they're being discriminated against are similar (born with them, can't change them, no logical reason as to why they make the person possessing them a lesser human being which would in turn entitle them to fewer rights than the next person, etc). But surely no one would argue that gays have been treated as badly as the blacks were.
