Higgs Boson Discovery Has Been Confirmed - Forbes

Last July, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, announced that it had finally discovered the elusive Higgs boson – or at least, a particle that matches the predictions of what the Higgs boson should look like. Now the organization has announced that its official findings have passed through the hurdle of peer review. Two papers describing the discovery have been published in the journal Physics Letters B.

In reality, this isn't as big of a deal as most think, but it is also a big deal in regards that most people don't understand.

The higgs was theorized almost 5 decades ago. It doesn't mean we have an explanation for the force of gravity, nor do we even really understand what mass is either. However, it is a big step in perfecting our standard model. The problem is, the standard model is a bit of a mess tbh. The big triumph in physics will be a grand unifying theory that ties all the forces together in a simple, yet elegant formula. Here's hoping it's within our lifetimes <3

It actually is a big deal. In 1915, Albert Einstein developed his theory of general relativity, having earlier shown that gravity does influence light's motion. Technically, Einstein predicted black holes with his theory but denied black holes could form and it was several times he stated this. When you state that we don't understand mass... are you referring to the multiple attributes of mass? I mean mass can be used in expressions of length such as the mass of a black hole, but I don't really understand what you are trying to say about our scientists and physicists not understanding mass.

I think you meant to state the origins of mass is unknown but it's what makes the Higgs particle so important. If we didn't understand mass like you stated then how can we give our observable universe an estimate in terms of mass?

You should look into the theoretical ideas of our universe simply existing in a black hole. In a quick statement I can say that the Big Bang might be our origins but it's simply a white hole that we are looking back at when we look deep into our universe.

I'm trying to figure out how you have a peer review on this. There's only one piece of machinery in the world that can create this type of experiment, so you're going to have only a few "peers" that could actually try to duplicate your experiment. It's not like every particle physicist in the world has a LHC sitting around to try and duplicate their findings.

They're not verifying the experiments, they're verifying the data. As in they look at all the data that came out of CERN and decide if it means the same thing CERN says it means.

Along those lines, now that they know where to look what's the probability that they can replicate with on a regular basis. Then it would be easy to bring peers in to watch live data.
